  2. What is Alcohol? • Organic compound in which the Hydroxyl Functional Group is bound to a carbon atom • A drink contains about 3-60 % Ethanol • Regulated by over 100 countries • 1 Trillion dollar a year industry

Dangers of Alcohol • Anemia- Low red blood cells to carry oxygen • Cancer- mouth, throat, voice box, esophagus, liver, breast, colorectal region • Cardiovascular Disease- Blood clots • Cirrhosis- Liver disease, cannot function correctly • Seizures- Can cause epilepsi • Gout- Uric acid in joints • High blood preassure- Constriction of blood vessels • Infectious Disease- Supresses the imune system • Nerve Damage- Weakness, incontinence, constipation, ED • Depression- Hand in hand, people who are depressed try to self medicate themselves with alcohol. But makes everything extremely severe and can lead to suicide

Alcohol use Today • 90 % of teenagers have used alcohol • 13 yrs of age is average for 1st time drinkers • 60% of emergency room visits are the cause of alcohol or drugs • 28% of college dropouts are alcohol users • 95% of all college campus violence is alcohol related • over 50% of car accidents are the cause of alcohol • 50% of suicides are caused by alcohol • 50% of all violent crimes are caused by alcohol

Where did it come from? • About 10,000 BC in the Neotithic Period • Egyptian pictographs about 4,000 BC show Importance • First made with barley, berries and honey • Discovered by complete accident • Used as a form of medicine • Beer in ancient Egypt contained • tetracycline • numerous amounts of nutrition value

Alcohol in History • Considered to be a gift from the gods. • Because of the feel good reaction it gives • Monks from the Catholic church where brew masters • Old testament (Genesis 9:20) Noah planted a vineyard on Mt. Aratat • The first refrigerator was made to brew cold lager in USA • The creation of agriculture • Harvesting Barley

The Dark Ages • Beer saved million of lives in the middle ages • In Europe, the water was so dangerous that drinking the water would kill you • Beer was the only thing you could drink without dying • UC Berkley professor proves that the boiling process killed bacteria and made the beer safe to drink • The hard times made people consume a lot of beer and unltimately saved them • Children even drank beer • a family would drink 600 liters of beer a year

Colonial times in the new world • When the Mayflower ran out of beer on the way to Virginia, They landed at the nearest point • Plymouth Rock • People where scarred of the water, so they all drank beer • Accorn Beer kept the colony going forward and the first taverns in the new world where built • Dec 16th 1773 The Green Dragon Tavern is where the idea began for the American Revolution. Plotted and planned in taverns • "Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy " • Benjamin Franklin

  10. Medicine • 1850 Luis Pasteur studied beer before milk • Found smaller bacteria cells • Germ Theory was the corner stone to modern medicine • Vaccines where created because now they understood what caused sickness and disease
