  1. Central Verification Kim Tree Senior Verifier – Accounting and Finance Iain Walker Senior Verifier – Business Management/Economics/Business Graded Unit Based upon a presentation by Robert Laird, Senior Verifier Administration and IT, VG 389.

  2. Introduction • Central verification is used for Graded Units • SQA is notified in October what Units each centre is offering • SQA makes selections and liaises with the Quality Enhancement Manager Mary Gao, who organises both visiting and central verification • Selections are made on the basis of delivery and resources available. • Dates are set in May and June for the central verification of Graded Units

  3. Preparation for Event • The Senior Verifier is informed about the event details, and the Centres to be selected • Invitations to External Verifiers are made by SQA • Standardisation meeting/training event arranged to discuss the strategy and sample

The Event • Packs are allocated to External Verifiers and checked (taking into account declared/known interests) • The process of reviewing work - Where to start? - Has internal verification taken place? - Is the Instrument of Assessment valid - The External Verifier takes a sample from the materials submitted - Read a script

  5. The Event • The process of reviewing work continued… • Application of the marking scheme • Arithmetic checks and grade (including cut-off scores in GU1) • Read more scripts • Are the marks and grades justified? • No problems - Accepted decisions

  6. The Event • Not Accepted decisions - Are made by the External Verifier - Final decisions are made by SQA • Report Writing –checked by SEV and SQA • Standardisation meetings take place throughout the event

  7. The Event • Final review of the event/input to Internal Assessment Report • Internal Assessment Reports will be placed on the website

How Centres Can Help … • Ensure that all Assessment Exemplar Packs are Internally Verified (including updates to the marking scheme) • Ensure that all Centre-Devised Assessments are Internally Verified and Prior-Verified by SQA • Include records of Internal Verification with candidate work • Include a copy of the Instrument of Assessment used

  9. How Centres Can Help … • Ensure that work is marked and that the marking is clear and consistent (Internal Verification) • Be dispassionate • Final check • Ensure that material is submitted in good order, and on time
