  6. SECTION B SCENARIO The local library is expanding and it has set up a computer section on its premises and it has also established an Internet access for the community development. The computer section has the following available for library members: • Six (6) computer in a network • System and application software installed • A laser printer • An inkjet printer • A combined printer/scanner/fax/copier machine (4 in 1) • Internet connectivity • Web cam

QUESTION 3 One of the library members is surprised to see this new development and he/she needs some answers to some of the following questions. 3.1 The library has a computer network. 3.1.1 Briefly explain what a network is, and how it can help the library. Network - Two or more connected computers that can share resources such as disks, printers and data disks 3.1.2 Name TWO types of networks. • LAN – Local Area Network • WAN - Wide Area Network • MAN – Metropolitan Area Network • GAN – Global Area Network • VPN – Virtual Private Network • EAN – Enterprise Area Network • PAN – Personal Area Network • Peer-to-Peer • Client-server

  8. 3.2 The computers in the library need hardware and software. Explain the difference between hardware and software AND give ONE example of each. Hardware – physical parts of a computer something you can see and touch e.g. Mouse , screen etc Software – instructions that tells the computer what to do e.g. computer program

  9. 3.3.1 Explain the difference between application software and operating system software. Application software - set of programs designed for a specific tasks used in a computer Operating system software - master controller program stored in memory to execute and regulates data flow and instructions 3.3.2 Give ONE example of an operating system. Window XP/Vista, (any acceptable answer)

  10. 3.4 The library has both a laser and inkjet printer available for users. Explain which will be cheaper to use and say why? Inkjet printer will be cheaper – cost of cartridges

  11. 3.5 The library has a printer/scanner/fax/copier (4 in 1) machine. 3.5.1 Explain what a scanner is. Scanner – an input device that can convert images or text into a digital format or an input device from which images from the scanners deck are being developed by means of a lens (filament). 3.5.2 Discuss TWO advantages of using a scanner. Advantages of a scanner – saves a lot of time - reproduces exact copies - can be helpful with storage as you can copy documents of pictures into a program on you computer. - Old photographs can be re-coloured 3.5.3 Is it better to have a 4-in-1 machine or rather have four separate peripherals? Give a reason for your answer. may be better to have a (4-in1) printer/scanner/copier – because it only uses one port, uses less electricity, it optimises office space, it is multifunctional and not much more expensive than just the scanner or just the copier, etc

  12. 3.6 The member does not know how to operate a mouse. 3.6.1 Explain when to double-click a mouse. Opening a document or program / Expanding a document 3.6.2 Explain when to drag a mouse. When you are moving something, to highlight text, to select more than one file or program.

  13. 3.7 The member sees a device attached to the computer and the librarian tells him that it is a web cam. 3.7.1 Briefly explain what a web cam is. A digital camera capable of downloading images to a computer for transmission over the Internet or other network Or A web cam is a device that can shoot photos and also produce high quality videos for transmission over the Internet or other network 3.7.2 State ONE benefit of using a web cam. It can make live video calls/ link to make images around the world / e-mail videos and photos by using them

  14. 3.8 A person in the library wants to use a storage device to save his work on. 3.8.1 Name two difference storage devices. DVD, CD, Memory stick, External Hdd, Stiffy Disk 3.8.1 Why should he save his work every few minutes? To prevent his work getting lost, incase of a power failure.

QUESTION 4 The library member who wants to use the computer is confronted with the following problems: 4.1 A message on the computer screen appears as: ‘enter password’. 4.1.1 Explain what a password is. A password is a word or string of characters entered (often along with a user name) into a computer system to log in or to gain access to some resource 4.1.2 Give the purpose of using passwords. Passwords are a means of protecting  a computer from unauthorised use/outsiders – to prevent outsiders from logging into your system and perform illegal actions 4.1.3 State TWO things that make a good password. The user must not use his / her date of birth / users name or surname must not be used. A combination of numbers and letters must be used

  16. 4.2 The library member has a five minute break and when he comes back the computer screensaver has come on. 4.2.1 Briefly explain what a screensaver is. A screensaver is a moving picture  that you can set on your screen and time it to start /function when you computer is not in use 4.2.2 What is a purpose of a screensaver? Today, screensavers are also used for entertainment or security purposes A screensaver is a type of computer program initially designed to prevent "Phosphor burn-in" on CRT and plasma computer monitors by blanking the screen or filling it with moving images or patterns when the computer was not in use 4.2.3 Give ONE way in which you can stop the screensaver. By pressing any key or moving the mouse

  17. 4.3 The member needs to find information on the Internet and the librarian tells him to do a search on the Internet. 4.3.1 Define the term Internet. Internet - Global network connection of computers with million users or a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). 4.3.2 Give ONE benefit why users could be better off searching for references on the Internet rather than using books for looking up things. The users will be able to get updated information rather than using books as their source of information

  18. 4.4 The library member is excited about the information that can be found on the Internet. 4.4.1 Once you have accessed Internet Explorer, what would you type in to access a specific site? Type in a Web address/URL or access a search engine 4.4.2 Explain what a website is AND give ONE feature of a website. Website - a page that belong to an organisation or company with all the menus and information about that company or organization Features of a website : Home page - initial/first page of a web Site map Unique URL Menus Hyperlinks 4.4.3 The member would like to save some information that he found on the Internet. Explain TWO advantages of using a 1 GB flash disk rather than using a stiffy disk on which to save the files that he found. A 1 Gb flash disk can hold more information than a 1.44.MB stiffy

  19. 4.5 The library member wishes to send e-mail to other members in his work group. Give THREE good manners (netiquette) that the member should practise when using the Internet. • Do not interfere with other people’s work • Do not send chain letters or pass on rubbish mail • Do not write in capital letters when sending messages to other people • Do not copy other people’s work and claim its your own

  21. QUESTION 5 The library assistant has been saving files on her computer in this way: 5.1 What type of file is KZN Circular 26? Pdf / Acrobat / Adobe / compressed 5.2 NEW GRADE 10 TG is a compressed folder. Explain what is meant by a compressed folder. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed, to reduce their file size, or stored as-is. (A zipped folder encrypted to be less than the original size)

  22. 5.3 The Template (1KB) folder is different from the other folders. State what kind of folder it is AND why the library assistant created it? A shortcut, for quicker way of accessing it 5.4 The library assistant says she is going to save all her documents on the Desktop then she will avoid wasting time trying to find them. 5.4.1 Advise the library assistant as to why she should not save too many documents on the Desktop. When you dump files on your desktop, it’s hard to find those files quickly, and it also slows down  your computer 5.4.2 List a computer feature that could help the library assist find files or folders quickly. Use the Start/Search feature on your Desktop to locate files/folders.
