  2. Ford Takes Office1974 - 1977 • After Nixon’s resignation, Gerald Ford was sworn in as president. Ford assured Americans, “_Our long national nightmare is over_.” On September 8, 1974, only a month after taking office, Ford granted Richard Nixon a pardon for any crimes he may have committed as president. This meant that the former president could not be _prosecuted for his part in the cover up. This pardon caused many Americans to question the new president’s actions and trustworthiness. This caused controversy in the United States.

  3. Do they deserve it? • Yet another controversy arose when President Ford offered amnesty, or protection from prosecution, to men who had _illegally avoided military service during the Vietnam War.

  4. Is this fair? • Ford promised that these people would not be punished if they __pledged loyalty to the United States and performed some type of national service. Some people supported the amnesty and others did not, wanting punishment for draft dodgers and deserters.

  5. Relations with other countries. • List 3 things that Ford did to improve Foreign Affairs: • 1. Met with Soviet Union leader to limit nuclear weapons • 2. Signed the Helsinki Accords that pledged to respect the human rights and civil liberties of their citizens. • 3. Improved relationswith China

  6. Is this happening today? • Some Americans suffered from underemployment, working in jobs that you are overqualified for, and _underpaid_.
