  2. The goal of our work today is to answer these three questions • Who has solutions now? • Who can make the changes we want? • How do we best use public media to highlight and expand on solutions?

  4. Percentage of Middle School Students Not Involved in Group Activities Outside of School or Home Source: New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey, 2009. Students were asked, “Outside of my home and school, I am a part of clubs, sports teams, church/temple, or other group activities.” The percentage reported here reflects respondents who answered “Not true at all.”

Some Survey Comments • Create a culture and expectation that parents will hold children to high standards • Have ongoing cultural humility trainings for administrators, teachers and staff where community experts and members can be •  ….When students see their families in the schools, being respected and engaged in positive ways, they are much more apt to both stay in school and respond positively to focused support to address their individual issues around staying in school • Provide mentors • It is important to address poverty and income/resource gaps • Most priorities listed above are geared toward lower-income families, however middle-class, college educated families need help keeping their kids engaged in school • It is not enough to make sure students and family has a computer...they need access to the web
