Making the Connection • Only 1% of all students enrolled at institutions of higher education in the United States study abroad* (*NAFSA: Association of International Educators 2010) • Studying Abroad will develop skills and give you experiences a classroom setting will never provide • To an employer and graduate schools, your experience sets you apart from other students: Self Motivated Independent Cultural Sensitivity Negotiating another culture Acquiring additional language • Do be cautious about touting too much of the travel/enjoyment aspect over the learning and development aspect! .

  3. Goals and Expectations from study abroad in regards to your future plans… • Clarify your goals for studying abroad and how they will impact your future plans • Determine what you want to gain from your Study Abroad experience • Think about how you might want to use that in your future plans

  6. LinkedIn • LinkedIn: Join the Notre Dame Alumni Network on LinkedIn. This system allows you to use the power of the ND alumni network to reach professionals outside the Notre Dame family.   7. Alumni Networking Resources • myNotre Dame- Secure online directory for Notre Dame Alumni • AlumniClubs-Notre Dame’s alumni are some of the most loyal alumni in the world. Connecting with alumni provides students with an excellent network of contacts. http://www.nd.edu/

  8. U.S. Companies Abroad • Uniworld consists of two online directories containing information and contacts for multinational corporations. Directories includes a list of American Firms operating overseas and Foreign Firms operating in the U.S. (Online Library) • Go IRISH Select the “Employers” tab and enter the name of the organization you are targeting into the keyword search. http://careercenter.nd.edu/

  9. “To-Do List” while Abroad… • Immerse yourself into the Language and Culture • Be open to building new relationships – more than networking • Volunteer • Connect with Professors and Administration • Job Shadow • Conduct Informational Interviews • Explore opportunities for an internship

  10. “To-Do List” while Abroad… • Since you will be off-campus you can still utilize may resources: • Virtual or phone appointments with counselors • Applying on-line through Go IRISH • Don’t sign up for on-campus interviews though – work with recruiter for a specified time for phone or Skype interviews • Emailing contacts on Go-IRISH about being abroad • On-Line Libraryand other on-line resources

Market your International Experience • Make note of your study abroad experience on your resume • Make note of your language skills and fluency level • Make note of all your International Experience by combining into one section • COMMUNICATE to Employers you have International experience and language Skills
