  3. State Department • Responsible for Foreign Policy • Protects the rights of citizens traveling abroad • Staff embassies • Analyzes data about Am. interests abroad • Speaks for the US at the UN • Created in 1789 • Secretary John Kerry • Lots of little known agencies to support their mission

Department of The Treasury • Formed September 2, 1789 with the purpose of handling U.S. money • The things that the Treasury can do are: manage US currency, handle income tax, issue securities, record and report money that is spent, and handle mints and coin money. • The Secretary of the Treasury is Jacob J. Lew • Other important departments that are a part of the Treasury are departments that handle Alcohol and Tobacco tax, Engraving and Printing money, handling the Debt, and managing the IR.

Department of Justice The current Attorney General: Eric Holder Attorney General James Cole Deputy Attorney General • Purpose: • Enforce the Law • Defund the Interests • Ensure public safety • Provide federal leadership • Preventing and controlling crime • Just punishment for those found guilty in trial • Ensure pair and impartial administration of government

It began in 1888 The secretary of this cabinet is Thomas Perez Some important agencies are the Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ), Office of Congressional & Intergovernmental Affairs (OCIA), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy (OASP), Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) The Department’s headquarters is housed in the Frances Perkins Building which was named after the first female cabinet secretary in history.

Department of Housing and Urban Development • Purpose: It is theDepartment of Housing and Urban Development’s mission to promote non-discrimination and ensure fair and equal housing opportunities for all Americans. • When: HUD was founded as a cabinet department on September 9, 1965 as a part of the “Great Society” program of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

  13. Department of Transportation(DOT) Established by act of congress on October 15, 1966. Purpose: DOT is a cabinet-level executive Dept. They develop and coordinate policies to provide an efficient and economical national transportation system. It’s purpose is to meet our vital interests and to improve the quality of life the people Began its business on April 1st, 1967. DOT was created to ensure the United States a fast, safe, efficient, accessible transportation system Secretary: Anthony Foxx Important Agencies: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Federal Railroad Administration (FTA), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) DOT was signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson

Department of Health and Human Services • Purpose: To protect the health of all Americans and to provide essential human services. • Ex: help provide health care, find people jobs, help parents find child care, keep food safe, and keep disease as contained as possible • When: 1980 • HHS branched off of HEW (Department of Health, Education, and Welfare) which was created by Eisenhower in 1953. • Secretary: Kathleen Sebelius • 21st secretary of HHS • Sworn in on April 28, 2009 • Important Agencies: • Office of the Secretary Staff Divisions • Operating Divisions • 11 operating divisions • Ex: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration • Regional Offices

Department of Homeland Security Other Agencies United States Citizenship and Immigration Services U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement United States Coast Guard United States Secret Service Transportation Security Administration Created in 2002 its 22 departments and agencies work to prevent threats and breaches to the security of the US. This department was created under George Bush in response to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Currently Headed By Rand Beer under Barack Obama. Responsibilities of Homeland Security range from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) customs, border and immigration security enforcement, and national disaster support to Anti terrorism.

  19. CIA In 1947 President Truman signed the national security act establishing the central intelligence agency. Through a process know as “the intelligence cycle” CIA agents collect, analyze, and disseminate Intel info of forgive countries to high ranking government officials. Created April 1, 1967 • The NTSB investigate accidents in the aviation's, highways, marines, pipelines, railroads, and accidents related to the transportation of hazardous materials. • They travel through out the country and to every corner of the world to investigate accidents and develop safety rules.

  26. Date/Purpose • It was created July 1st 1971. • The purpose of the United States Postal Service is to provide postal service throughout the United States.

  28. Environmental Protection AgencyEPA Began Operation on December 2, 1970. The EPA is in charge of enforcing environmental laws, as well as educating the population about these laws and ways to help the environment.

EEOC“ Equal employment opportunity commission” The EEOC was created on July 2, 1965 The commission investigates discrimination complaints based on one’s race, color, religion, sex, age, and disability. The EEOC has the power to file a lawsuit of discrimination against employers. In 1961, before the EEOC was created, President Kennedy signed an executive order that made the government contractors take affirmative action to ensure equal opportunity. This established President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity.

  31. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) • Date Created: 1914 • The Federal Trade Commission is the nation’s consumer protection agency and one of the government agencies responsible for keeping competition among businesses strong. Crockett Hayes

  33. What is the purpose of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission? To ensure the safe use of radioactive materials to benefit civilians and protect people and the environment. They regulate commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, like nuclear medicine, by licensing and inspecting using it’s required regulating factors.

  34. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Created December 29th, 1970 Established by Congress, the OSHA states that all employers must provide a provide training, outreach, education, and compliance assistance to employees.

  35. Securities and Exchange Commission • The SEC is the primary overseer and regulator of the U.S. securities markets • It was created in 1934. Its original purpose was to restore investor confidence after the stock market crash of 1929 • Today, its purpose is to: • Protect investors • Maintain and regulate the market • Require public companies to disclose important financial and other market-related information to the public • Take action against insider trading, accounting fraud, and companies that provide false or misleading information
