  2. It never states what battle, nor does it ever say that it is The Civil War. • Most literary scholars do believe it is an unnamed battle of the U.S. Civil War.

  3. Chapter 1 Continued • Henry Fleming (also known as “the youth”) has been marching and camping with his regiment of Union (Northern Army) soldiers for weeks. • They have been bored and on edge waiting for the call to battle The Confederacy. • Jim, a tall soldier, stirs up a rumor that they will soon be fighting. • This is the eighth time in the last two weeks they have heard that rumor. • The rumor turns out to once again be fallacious.

  4. Chapter 1 Continued • Henry enlisted in the war. He had daydreamed of being a hero. • His mother tells him to not be a fool. She gives him a bundle of shirts and socks, as well as a jar of his favorite blackberry jam. She tells him to be a good boy. • The youth hears heroic tales as well as stories of starvation and fear. He worries he will run when he sees his first battle.

  5. Chapter 3 • They continue to march and camp and then march and camp. • He sees dead soldiers as marches. • He questions the commanders and generals, wondering if they are stupid. • The youth thinks it might be best to die in his first battle.

  6. Chapter 3 Continued • The chapter ends as skirmishes of a battle begin to reach the ears and eyes of the youth. • A loud soldier places a hand on Henry’s shoulder. He solemnly states, “It’s my first and last battle…” • He hands Henry a packet done up in a yellow envelope. He tells Henry to deliver it to his family. The loud soldier then wanders off giving Henry a final tomblike glance. WE WILL READ CHAPTERS 4 and 5 IN CLASS

  8. Chapter 7 • Henry realizes that the Union has won again. • He feels guilty and shamefaced as a criminal. • He starts to walk back to the battle site. • He sees injured and dead soldiers.
