  9. Sustainability

  10. Benefits of designing to LEED specifications • Economic • Reduction of energy use • 13% lower maintenance costs • Added cost of certification and commissioning = .6% • Anticipated cost benefit of $5,000,000 over a 20 yr. period • Payback for the expense will be approximately 1-2 yrs. • Environmental • Reduction of water use • 75% less construction waste • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions • Social • 16-26% increase in productivity • 15% decrease in absenteeism • 27% higher occupant satisfaction Sustainability

  11. Use of drought tolerant landscaping and bioswales • Water efficient landscaping • no potable water & 62% reduction in total irrigation water use • Overall building water use – 33% reduction • Green roof at art bldg • high insulating value and reduces water runoff • Building orientation takes full advantage of daylight opportunities • Roof-mounted photovoltaic panels • Contributes 13% to the building’s overall • energy cost savings of 33% • Domestic hot water solar panels • Geothermal-based mechanical system • efficient operation and user controllability • Use of recycled and regional materials • Extensive use of low-emitting finishes and materials Sustainability

  12. ROOF PLAN Roof Plan

  13. The roof has excellent solar resource available throughout the year. In addition, the roof area has very large expanses of available area that is free from obstructions or elements that will cause shading. This makes for an ideal installation for photovoltaic technology. The building is oriented 35 degrees west of due south. As demonstrated in the chart below, the orientation of modules away from due south has less of an impact on annual energy production than tilting the module away from a flat orientation. Once a module is tilted, however, rows of modules must be separated to avoid shading. The net effect of tilting is a loss in power density for a given roof area. Photovoltaic Analysis
