By: Kate Brian Multimedia Independent Book Study English 12 2 By: Heather Braun
  2. Characters Ariana Osgood Kaitlynn Nottingham Briana Leigh Covington
  3. Ariana Osgood Physical: Ariana has light blue eyes, shoulder length blonde wavy hair, She has a pixie-like nose that drops daintily down from its peak. Her Cupid's-bow red lips surround her small mouth with perfect pearl white teeth. Ariana is lanky, and about 5’9. Emotional: Ariana has different types of emotion in two different parts of the story. In the correctional facility she is very spoiled yet vulnerable, suicidal (attempting suicide many times), psychotic , ill-tempered and hateful toward inmates and her therapist. Once she has escaped she is a nervous wreck, always paranoid of getting caught and uncertain of what she is going to do next. Relational: Ariana is closely related to two characters in this book; 1) Kaitlynn Nottingham; Kaitlynn is Ariana cellmate at Brenda T. Trumbull Correctional Facility for Women. They first met at the facility, but have been friends ever since and have not spent anytime apart. Their days spent at the facility consisted of planned their escape, and how they were going to prevent themselves from getting caught down to ever last detail . 2) Briana Leigh Covington; Briana Leigh is the girl that Ariana kills once she escapes the correctional facility. She plots Briana’s death to look like it is actually her own and she takes Briana’s identity.
  4. Kaitlynn Nottingham Physical: Kaitlynn has a pretty face, bright green round eyes, light brown/copper curly medium-length hair, a small upturned nose, rosy cheeks, and long lashes which are perfectly suited for a child’s porcelain doll. She is of small stature, around 5’3 and slim. Emotional: Kaitlynn is not much of an emotional person, but she always seems to be calm and quite yet underneath her cover she is a very deranged person. Relational: Kaitlynn is closely related to two people in this book; 1) Ariana Osgood; Kaitlynn are Ariana are cell mates at the correctional facility, but not only cellmates but rather best friends. During the days in the facility the girls told each other everything about themselves, but most importantly planned their escape to freedom. 2) Grandma C.; Kaitlynn’s parents died when she was 10, so she moved in with family friends; the Covington's. Grandma Covington lived with her son and granddaughter Briana at their estate. Grandma C. was practically a mother for Kaitlynn after her birth mother died. When Kaitlynn was accused for killing Phillip Covington; Grandma C’s son, and put into the facility, Grandma C. was the only one who believed that Kaitlynn was innocent. Grandma was the only person who would write to Kaitlynn while she was at the Correctional Facility.
  5. Briana Leigh Covington Physical: Briana Leigh has long silky dark brown hair, deep-set chocolate brown eyes that look at you like a puppy dog. Her dimples are pressed under her high cheekbones. Briana has caramel colored tan skin and stands at 5'5" and has a petite figure. Emotional: Briana Leigh is a happy-go-lucky person. She is extremely kind hearted, and friendly to everyone. Briana would never hurt a fly. Relational: Briana is related closely to two characters; 1)Kaitlynn Nottingham; Kaitlynn was like a sister to Briana since she moved into her house at 10 years old. They were sisters and best friends, sharing secrets and growing up together, but after Kaitlynn murdered Briana’s dad Phillip, their friendship was broken and they never spoke again. 2) Téo; Téo was Briana fiancé. Not much is known about Téo but Kaitlynn says about how much time he and Briana spend together travelling the world.

  7. Cast of Characters Film Version Kaitlynn Nottingham; Kristen Stewart I choose Kristen Stewart for the character Kaitlynn Nottingham. She fits the character Kaitlynn’s physical description well. She has bright green Ariana Osgood; Annalynne McCord I choose Annalynne McCord to play Ariana Osgood because she fits the physical description with shoulder length blonde wavy hair, and being lanky. Also Annalynne plays in the series 90210 and she is very good at playing an emotional and vulnerable character, that has to deal with many obstacles, which is what Ariana deals with in the book. Annalynne McCord is an overall great actress and I feel she is perfect for the part. eyes, light brown/copper curly medium-length hair. With her role in Twilight she seems to be calm and quite yet underneath her cover she is a fighter if she needs to be, which describes Kaitlynn Nottingham perfectly.
  8. Cast of Characters Film Version Briana Leigh Covington; Vanessa Hudgens I choose Vanessa Hudgens because she acts in High School Musical and similar to Briana Leigh she is an Dr. Meloni; Tom Hanks I choose Tom Hanks to play Dr. Meloni because he is very versatile. He has played many different roles during his career extremely kind hearted person, and friendly to everyone. She fits the physical description with long dark brown hair, chocolate brown eyes, small dimples that are pressed under her high cheekbones and caramel colored tan skin. Vanessa Hudgens is a perfect match for Briana Leigh. and does them all extremely well. The book does not explain Dr. Meloni’s physical description but when I read the book I pictured someone that looks like Tom Hanks as the doctor.
  9. Cast of Characters Film Version Grandma C.; Betty White I choose Betty White for the character of Grandma C. because from the information told about her she in a very innocent and funny women. Since Betty was once a comedian, and played in the show Golden Girls which is a comedy show I think she would be perfect for the role of Grandma Covington.
  10. Writing Style 2. Finally she saw Maria Huff, Maria was small all over, about four-foot nine, with toothpick legs, and arms that appeared as if they could be snapped like twigs. 1. Thick, leather-bound books sat on the shelves to his right, most of which she was sure he hadn’t even opened, let alone read. Her lip curled at the sight of his fake tan. His overly gelled salt and pepper hair. His heavily starched blue shirt. His capped teeth. 3. Téo was not unattractive. He was on the shorter side, maybe five-foot-eight, but had broad shoulders and large hands. With olive skin, dark hair shorn close to his head, and gleaming black eyes.
  11. Writing Style 5. Ariana paused outside the imposing iron gates. Paused and took a deep, satisfying breath. She closed her eyes and let it all soak in. The clean, fresh air. The cool breeze carrying the slightly musky scent of the oncoming autumn. The popping of luxury car doors and the shouts of students greeting one another from a long summer apart. 4. Ariana felt as if the bright sun outside was mocking her. As if the four posts around the bed were tilting in around her, getting ready to clamp her down to the mattress and swallow her through the floor into hell. 10 words; 1. Independence 2. Privilege 3. 12. Plot Climax The plot climax is when Ariana escape from the Correctional Facility. The escape took careful planning and actions. The planning started at the beginning of the year. Each time Ariana’s mother sent her magazines or personal items she would sell them to get money, and she saved the money. She knew that every 4th of July they were aloud out in the yard to watch the fireworks at night, and the fireworks would make a good distraction for the guards as well as make lots of noise so no one could hear them escaping. That day she ordered a roast beef sandwich, but took off the roast beef and saved it. She knew that her and Kaitlynn would not be able to look suspicious and would have to move fast. They both knew the plan and never spoke a word of it even to each other after it was set. They made their way over to the bush on the south side of the yard. As soon as a big firework went off the girls jumped into the big bush and stayed still for a moment. As soon as the next firework went off Ariana began to crawl under the fence. Each day at lunch she had throw the roast beef off her sandwich to the guard dog just under the fence so the dog would have to dig for it. The hole wasn’t quite big enough so Ariana had to dig with her fingernails. She finally got under the fence after a lot of hard work and cuts from the bottom of the fence. She threw the roast beef that she had saved since lunch to the guard dog to keep him from barking. As soon as she was free Ariana ran for her life. The girls plan was to meet on the other side of the lake that they could see from the facility. They broke into a lakeside cabin and stole clothes, toothbrushes and soap. They went into the lake and washes quickly and ditched their prison clothes, put on they’re new one and kept running for their lives. With the money Ariana had saved from selling magazines they bought hair dye, and a bus ticket to Dallas. While waiting for the bus they had just enough time to dye their hair, clean up and look like completely new girls.
  13. If Something Different Happened After Ariana’s escape from the Correctional Facility she went on to meet Briana Leigh Covington, Kaitlynn’s ex-best friend. Ariana became “best friends” with Briana Leigh and spent most days together, but only to set up her death. She killed Briana by drowning her in the lake beside the Correctional Facility and put her very own personal necklace from her father that she never took off, on Briana’s neck. Briana was never found until a month later so the only way they could identify the body was by the necklace, and the prison guards were sure it was Ariana because they knew she never took the necklace off. After that, Ariana stole Briana’s identity, enrolled herself into school and began to live her privileged lifestyle once again. If Ariana hadn't escaped from the correctional facility she would never killed, and stolen Briana identity, and gotten her privileged life back. Everyone's lives outside the facility would have remained the same, including her parents who would know their daughter was safe rather than dead and Briana Leigh would still be alive. Ariana would still be in the Correctional Facility which would not be an exciting book because there would be nothing happening except a boring life in a cell with the same daily routine.
  14. News Report Breaking News, Friday evening two female convicts, Ariana Osgood and Kaitlynn Nottingham escaped from the Brenda T. Trumbull Correctional Facility for women. This is a high-security facility. Prison officials confirmed that the prisoners were discovered missing July 4th around 9:30 p.m. Both escapees are serving time for murder and they are considered extremely dangerous. Authorities say the suspects have apparently split up and are still on the loose. It's unclear where they may be. Prisoner information: Ariana Osgood, a 19 year old female, who was serving a 20 year to lifetime sentence for murder. Physical Description: Ariana has light blue eyes, shoulder length blonde wavy hair and she is lanky; she stands 5 foot 9 inches and is 125 pounds. Kaitlynn Nottingham, an 18 year old female, who was also serving a 20 year to lifetime sentence for murder. Physical Description: Kaitlynn has bright green eyes, light brownish/ copper curly medium-length hair. She is of small stature, stands 5 foot 3 inches and 115 pounds. The prisoners were last seen in the facilities wearing bright orange jumpsuits. Helicopters and K-9 units have joined the search for the women. If you have any information please contact your local authorities.
  15. Conflict One of the conflicts in “Privilege” is Man verses Society. Once Ariana has escaped from the Correctional Facility, has killed Briana Leigh and has stolen her identity, everywhere she goes she has to be Briana Leigh and not Ariana. This would be hardest with Briana’s family, fiancéand friends so Ariana sends a break up letter to Briana’s fiancé telling him she never wants to see him again. She also writes a letter to Grandma C (who she lives with) to tell her that she is travelling for the rest of the summer with her “fiancé”, which was a normal thing for Briana to do so Grandma C. didn’t think much of it. Ariana couldn’t wait to get back to school so she applied to a prep school far away from home for the fall. Once she got back from “travelling” she would head straight to school and would not have to see any family or friends. But the thing about school, Ariana is actually 19 years old, while Briana was 16 years old. Ariana would have to pretend to be much younger than she actually is. Also she had to change her looks and personality for the rest of her life. The solution would not completely materialize because Ariana would always be looking over her shoulder, having to be carful about what she says to people, who she became friends with and who to trust. It would be like she was on the run for the rest of her life, and would never be able to be completely rid of these lies. She could have handled this conflict differently by turning herself in and owning up to her actions. She would have to face her consequences and return to prison and finish her sentence but after her sentence she would be free to lead a guilt free life as herself instead of as someone else.
  16. Theme The are a few themes in the book. One is crime; throughout the entire book the main character Ariana is involved with crime. First she is in a correctional facility for murder, then she escaped the facility and once out into the real world she kills another person and steels her identity. Another theme is privilege, a privileged lifestyle is lived by most characters and is the reason the author, Kate Brian choose the title “Privilege” for this novel. It is an appropriate title because the main characters in the book are very privileged young girls. This meaning that they are from the richest families, live in the biggest mansions, in the best parts of town, along with having the most expensive clothes, accessories and shoes. The girls live privileged lives except for Ariana while she is in the Brenda T. Trumbull Correctional Facility for Women for murder, but the whole time she in in the facility she is dreaming of the privileged lifestyle she should be living and is planning on doing everything possible to get a second chance at the glamorous life she had left behind. As soon as she escaped the correctional facility she has a plan to return to her privileged life.
