PlaneMon is an advanced online monitoring system developed by Evan Goetz and Keith Riles at the University of Michigan. It analyzes microphone channel data in real time to detect airplane signals. The system utilizes Doppler-shifted frequencies to derive key airplane parameters and generates logs, triggers, and trajectory plots over LIGO sites. The analysis pipeline involves FFTs and clustering techniques to identify candidate events, which are then fitted to a Doppler equation. Ongoing development includes improving multi-channel monitoring and enhancing web interfaces for data visualization.

  1. PlaneMon:Airplane Detection Monitor Evan Goetz & Keith Riles (University of Michigan) DCC: G050402-00-Z

  2. Outline • Purpose • Modeling Airplane Signals • Analysis Pipeline • Sample Fit Results • Implemented so far • More to go…

  3. Purpose • An online DMT monitor to analyze microphone channel data in real-time looking for airplane signals • Creation of logs and triggers • Plotting trajectories over the LIGO sites (eventually)

  4. Modeling Airplane Signals • Doppler shifted frequencies • We want to know: vp, s, n, t0 • Assumptions: • Zero acceleration • Constant altitude • Linear trajectories What microphones measure t = t0

  5. Modeling Airplane Signals (cont.)

  6. Analysis Pipeline Microphone Data Hann windowed, whitened, FFTs with 50% overlap Largest cluster of bins > threshold is marked as an airplane data point Once enough bins exceed threshold, PlaneMon triggered to save data as candidate event Cut excess data points and fit trimmed data to Doppler equation Get airplane parameters: vp, s, n0, t0 Output plots to webpage, generate triggers

  7. Sample Fit Results Vp = 143.667 m/s S = 4.462 km n= 79.205 Hz t0 = 752365573+31.273 GPS

  8. Sample Fit Results EndY t0 = 752053325.98 MidY t0 = 752053332.37

  9. Implemented So Far • Single Channel Monitor • Outputs ROOT plots • A few minor bugs to work out • Multi-Channel Monitor (nearly complete) • Outputs GIF plots to webpage for viewing • Archives airplane events

  10. More to do… • Fix minor bugs in analysis code • Complete web interface • Generate triggers and alarms • Add verbosity options for web summaries • Triangulation • Plot trajectories over the sites Anticipate to be ready in time for S5
