  2. CEIAG Update “Preparing for Success” (DENI January 09) • “In Post Primary Schools the CEIAG Programme is normally provided through discrete career lessons and activities. However, every learning pathway can make a helpful contribution to the CEIAG provision. To ensure learners benefit from these cross curricular career learning experiences it is essential that links to the curriculum be clear.” (Preparing for Success, DENI)

CEIAG Update Subject specialists play an important role in: • linking subject content to the CEIAG Learning Intentions • making connections between the development of skills and capabilities across the revised curriculum in preparation for adult and working life • updating own knowledge of employment opportunities. “Preparing for Success” DENI Page 23)

  4. CEIAG Update “Evaluating the Quality of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance provided by Schools, Colleges and Training Organisations.” (ETI April 09) 4.1.4. CEIAG is integrated with other curriculum activities Evidence: Signposting of CEIAG in subject areas schemes of work

CEIAG UpdateHeads of Departments / Subject Coordinators Using the Learning Intentions listed (pages 1 – 2), the suggested ways in which curricular areas can contribute to CEIAG (page 3) and the table indicating how Employability Skills can contribute to CEIAG (pages 7 - 9): • Ensure that reference is made to CEIAG and Employability Skills in each Departmental Curriculum Statement • Review schemes of work and ensure that CEIAG and Employability Skills are signposted throughout (where appropriate)

CEIAG UpdateHeads of Departments / Subject Coordinators • Ensure the promotion of CEIAG and Employability Skills in your subject (e.g. CEIAG and Employability Skills highlighted on a subject’s notice board, guest speakers, records of teacher / pupil conversations relating to CEIAG / Employability Skills, CEIAG / Employability Skills information / resources available in rooms / school library) • Provide the Careers Department, annually, with a list of careers resources / texts / information / DVDs / magazines etc related to the subject area so that the careers department can endeavour to requisition them

CEIAG UpdateHeads of Departments / Subject Coordinators Complete the Template provided (P 5 – 6) so that the Careers Department can have a whole school picture which will inform the creation of a Curriculum Map for CEIAG and Employability Skills in Lurgan College Return information by Friday 19th June 09 • Any further inspection could ask for copies of each subject area’s Curriculum Statement and Schemes, to see where CEIAG has been signposted and how it has been integrated into lessons • Inspectors will probably ask pupils about their experiences of CEIAG in subject areas • Inspectors will probably ask the Careers Department for the CEIAG Curriculum Map

CEIAG Update Outcome / Implications for all staff: • Promote CEIAG and Employability Skills in lessons. • Have evidence of this (e.g. CEIAG and Employability Skills highlighted on a notice board, guest speakers, records of teacher / pupil conversations relating to CEIAG / Employability Skills, CEIAG / Employability Skills information / resources available in rooms / school library

CEIAG Update Dates for your diary: All Year 14 involved in: • University of Ulster Open Day – Thursday 10th September • Queen’s University Open Day – Friday 11th September • Interview Skills Day – Thursday 24th September New initiative: • Year 14 Parents Careers Information Evening Tuesday 8th September @ 7:30pm

CEIAG Update UCAS References: A Template will be emailed to all staff for subject specific comments (A copy of the template is attached to your handout after page 9) • Comments to be positive. • Particularly interested in comments which highlight areas within the subject area that the pupil is excelling in e.g. in a particular module, in a particular topic • Comments that highlight subject specific skills • Comments which focus on individual pupils effort, passion for the subject etc • Length: about 5 – 6 typed lines / short paragraph

  12. CEIAG Update UCAS References: Example “Darren has been extremely motivated in his studies. He particularly enjoys the study of Galatians. It is obvious from his essays and classroom contributions to whole class discussions that he clearly understands Paul’s theological perspective on Grace. Darren has carried out research on the main issues involved, showing that he is self motivated and can manage his own learning. He will achieve a very good grade in this subject at A Level.” No predicted grade is required until Sept / Oct
