  1. Weather Forecast Web quest by Stephanie Hellstrom

  2. WE WILL… • Learn how to check the weather in our city and other cities within the US. • Learn to predict the weather within our city or others within the US. • Practice our writing through a journaling exercise. • Learn how to plan a vacation: activities and what to pack.

  3. Find Out • Today’s expected • TEMPERATURE • HUMIDITY • WIND • DAILY RAIN • PRESSURE • WIND CHILL • You will find these answers at www.weather.com • Enter in the zip code (53081) and click SEARCH • Hint: click on DETAILS under the RIGHT NOW category  Record Findings on chart

  4. PICK • Pick two cities other than the one you live in. The city must be in the USA. For both cities find out: • Today’s expected • TEMPERATURE • HUMIDITY • WIND • DAILY RAIN • PRESSURE • WIND CHILL Click here: Cities to choose from… HINT: you must find the zip code for each city first and then enter it in the box and click SEARCH, just as you did with our own city.  Record your findings in the chart.

  5. CITIES TO CHOOSE FROM • New York City, New York • Seattle, Washington • Washington D.C. • Atlanta, Georgia • Minneapolis, Minnesota • Springfield, Illinois • Saint Louis, Missouri • Miami, Florida • Las Vegas, Nevada • Click on the city of your choice.Enter in city name Use the first zip code listed under your city

  6. PREDICT • Predict temperature, rain, and wind for the weekend for each city you picked. • Record predictions in your journal.

  7. CLICK • Click on the WEEKEND link for each of the two cities you picked. • Find out the temperature, rain, and wind for the weekend for each city. • Record Findings in your journal.

  8. WRITE • Write a journal entry comparing the two cities you picked. • This entry should declare which city would be better to visit for the weekend (in your opinion) based on the weather. • This entry should also include what types of clothing you should pack and what types of activities you may do while visiting the city. •  REMEMBER: The things you pack must be realistic. You would not pack flip flops if it were snowing or an umbrella for sunshine.

  9. CREATE • Create a PowerPoint reflecting your journal entry. • It must include • a page dedicated to comparing and contrasting the two cities you choose • a list of what to pack • pictures of 3 activities planned NOTE: This PowerPoint will be presented in class. CLICK HERE: SAMPLE OF POWERPOINT

  10. Reflect • Reflect on the activity we just did. • What did you like about finding out the weather for other cities? • How is this activity useful to helping you plan trips to other places? • How is it useful to you on a daily basis in your own city? • Record your answers in your journal.

  11. NOW YOU KNOW • How to find the weather forecast in your own city. • How to predict the forecast for days to come. • How to check weather in other places. • How to plan around the weather when going on vacation (what to wear, what activities to plan).

  12. Austin, Texasvs. Albany, New Yorkby: Miss Hellstrom

  13. Weekend Forecast • Albany, New York (12201): • Weekend weather includes: • Friday: 66 degrees F with showers • Saturday: 68 degrees F partly cloudy • Sunday: 73 degrees F partly cloudy • Austin, Texas (73301): • Weekend weather includes: • Friday: 83 degrees F with scattered t-storms • Saturday: 82 degrees F with scattered t-storms • Sunday: 83 degrees F with scattered t-storms

  14. Which is Better? • I would rather visit Albany, New York this weekend. Austin, Texas is predicted to have a higher temperature for the weekend than Albany, New York. However, Austin is also supposed to receive scattered thunderstorms throughout the entire weekend. Albany, NY is going to have partly cloudy weather on Saturday and Sunday with temperatures that require only a sweater or light jacket. I would rather tolerate a lower temperature than deal with thunderstorms for a whole weekend.

  15. What to bring? • On my trip to Albany, NY, I intend to pack; • Three pair of jeans • One pair of flip flops • One pair of tennis shoes • Two sweaters • One jacket • Two t-shirts • An umbrella (for Friday)

  16. Activities to do in Albany, NY Exhibit: The Seasons of Albany, The Evanescent Beauty That Surrounds Us Henry Hudson Planetarium The Albany Aqua Ducks & Trolleys, CLICK HERE: to go back to directions
