4. Favorite thing about Alabama My favorite thing about Alabama is the Alabama Crimson Tide Football program. The football team began in 1892. They have won 13 national championships. From 1958 to 1982, the team was led by Paul “Bear” Bryant. Coach Bryant is a legion in Alabama and current coach Nick Saban won the National Championship in 2009. Mark Ingram won the first Heisman trophy for the University of Alabama and Trent Richardson is in the running for 2011. Bryant-Denny stadium is where the home games are played and has a capacity of 101,821, that’s the 5TH largest in college football stadium. My family loves Alabama Football and we are always saying “ROLL TIDE”. Slide 1

5. ALABAMA HISTORY On December 14, 1819, Alabama became a state of the United States of America. Alabama joined the union as the 22nd state and became known as the “Heart of Dixie.” After the American Revolution, the Confederacy was founded at Montgomery in February 1861, and for a time, the city was the Confederate capital. Cotton and slave laborers were a big part of Alabama’s economy during the first half of the 19th century. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Cotton production began to soar in the south and settlers began to pour into the fertile lands of Alabama. After the Civil War, cotton remained Alabama’s chief crop until 1915, when the boll weevil destroyed cotton crops across the state. After the Civil War, the blacks and whites segregated. Booker T. Washington, who was born into slavery, became the first leader of the Tuskegee Institute training blacks with occupational skills. In December 1955, the Montgomery Bus Boycott occurred when the African Americans refused to ride public buses. After the boycott, tension continued between the blacks and whites. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed segregation in schools, public places and employment. Slide 2

6. Creek Indians The Creek Indians also are known as the Muscogee or Muskogee Indians. They are Native American people who are traditionally from the Southeastern United States. They were the first Native Americans to be “civilized” under George Washington’s civilization plan. It is believed that the Creek culture began as a way to guard against other larger conquering Indian tribes of the region. From the 1500’s to the 1600’s the Creeks dominated all of the South-East United State until the Cherokee would force them westward to Alabama and to what is now known as Oklahoma. The Creek Indians raise cows, horses and pigs as livestock. Unlike many Southeastern Indian tribes, the Poarch Creeks were not taken from their tribal lands, and have lived together for over 150 years. The ancestors of the Poarch Creek Indians lived along the Alabama River. The Muscogee were not one tribe but a union of several. They were descendants of the Mississippian culture peoples, who built earthwork mounds at their regional chiefdoms located throughout the Mississippi River Valley. The most important leader in Muscogee society was the village chef. The village chief lead warriors in battle and represented their villages. Slide 3

7. Famous Alabamian Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron was born on February 5, 1934. He was nicknamed “Hammer,” “Hammerin’ Hank” and “Bad Henry.” Hank was an American baseball played for the Major League Baseball from 1954 to 1976. He was known as one of the “Greatest Baseball Players.” Hank Aaron broke the career home run record set by Babe Ruth. He played for the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves in the National League and the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League. He was born in Mobile, Alabama to Herbert and Estella Aaron. He had seven siblings. He had one brother that also played Major League Baseball. He grew up in a poor family, picking cotton on a farm, and to this day people say that strengthened his hands so he could hit more home runs. He practiced baseball by hitting bottle caps with sticks. At the age of fifteen he had his 1st tryout with the MLB franchise. He had an awesome baseball career setting many records. On August 1, 1982, Hank Aaron was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. 16. Governor of Alabama The current Governor of Alabama is Robert Bentley. He was born February 3, 1943. He is an American politician, medical doctor, and the 53rd Governor of Alabama. Robert Bentley is a native of Columbiana, Alabama. He graduated from Shelby County High School and the University of Alabama. He received his degree in medicine. He joined the United States Air Force in 1969 as a captain. After his military service, he began a three year residency in dermatology. In 2002, Bentley was elected to the Alabama State House of Representatives. Slide 13

17. President of the Unites States of America The current President of the United States is Barack Obama. He was born August 4, 1961. He is the 44th President and the first African American to hold office. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barack Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He served as United States Senator from Illinois from January 2005 until 2008, when he won the presidential election. President Obama married Michelle Robinson on October 3, 1992. They have two daughters. They have a Portuguese Water dog named Bo. Slide 14

Huntsville man robbed of wallet in 400 block of U.S. 72 East • November 27, 2011, 1:37PM • Huntsville police reported a man was robbed of his wallet Saturday night in the 400 block of U.S. 72 East. The man told police he was sitting in his car when he was approached by two men. One of the men asked to use the victim's cell phone, and while the victim was talking with one of the men, the other grabbed his wallet, according to police. Both men ran from the area. The man wasn't injured and the case is under investigation Slide 16

Oh, there may be some compelling games. (OK, don't bother watching the Pac-12 Championship Game for competitive purposes.) But the sport that says every game counts -- arguably the biggest PR shams in sports -- already has its championship game set, no matter how much debate you'll hear this week to build interest. • It will be LSU vs. Alabama unless an incredible number of voters change their mind. This isn't like 2006, when voters decided against a rematch. That happened after Michigan lost and then USC lost. Alabama's season is done and it's at No. 2.
