  2. Iran – Somalia Ties • Hampered military ties • Relations between Iran and Somalia were hampered for several years as a result of Iranian support of anti-governmental insurgent groups in Somalia.

  4. Iran – Somalia Ties • Iran has an indirect economic relationship with Somalia • One of Iran’s primary shipping routes runs through the Arabian Sea and by Somalia via the Gulf of Aden.  • Iranian commercial and oil cargo ships pass through the Gulf of Aden

  6. Analysis of Situation • Somalia lacks a central government ever since the fall of the oppressive SiadBarre regime in 1991 • Making it impossible to control the piracy problem

  7. Analysis of Situation • Dumping of waste into the waters near Somalia • Tonnes of nuclear and toxic waste illegally dumped in Somali waters by several European firms • Led to erosion of fish stock

Analysis of Situation • Lack of armed forces in Somalia • Fishing trawlers from other countries being able to illegally fish within Somalia’s exclusive economic zone, without a coast guard to stop them • Estimated $300 million of tuna, shrimp, and lobster being taken each year, depleting stocks previously available to local fishermen

  9. Proposed Solutions • Coordinate with the other nations for the anti-piracy patrols • A further step from solely protecting Iranian shipping lanes

  10. Proposed Solutions • UN resolution to ban illegal fishing within Somalia’s exclusive economic zone • Prevent further exploitation of Somalia’s exclusive economic zone by fishing trawlers from other countries

Proposed Solutions • UN resolution to provide Somalia with financial assistance in cleaning of toxic waste • UN resolution to ban dumping of waste in Somalia’s waters • Prevent further erosion of fish stock in Somalia’s waters • Prevent further contamination of marine life • Health problems have also resulted from the consumption of contaminated fish stock

  12. Proposed Solutions • Provide assistance to Somalia in building a Navy • Enabling Somalia to secure its coast and combat piracy • Long term solution to prevent illegal fishing within Somalia’s exclusive economic zone • Provision technical expertise • Sharing of technology

  13. Conclusion • In favourof assisting Somalia in combating piracy issue due to economic interest • While piracy is a serious problem, it is more important that the roots of the piracy problem be solved • Failure in eliminating the root causes of piracy will result in pertinent problem
