  2. What isClinical Translational Research? • CTR is research in communities focused on specific issues. (Diabetes Prevention) • Researchers analyze data • Then educate community where research occurred • Implement changes to improve the community • EMPOWERMENT

Clinical Research • Normally, graduate or post graduate students conduct research • If research is published, it’s for the experts • DPD uses high school students • Our research is published for the experts • We also educate our communities • DPD is using CTR to fix the problem with the diabetes epidemic in WV

  5. Defend and Protect Against DiabetesPhase 1 • HSTA student become certified researchers • Gather information from our communities • Information gets analyzed • Take information back to the communities • DPD has been a focus for HSTA projects for the last two years

What We’ve Learned from DPD Nationally • 30% are obese • 5.6% are diabetics West Virginia • 50% are obese • 10.4% are diabetics • 23% of adults +21 w/ BMI +30 are diabetic • Children ages 9-11 are the fastest growing group of obese 1 out of every 3 children will develop diabetes if we don’t change

  8. Frightening Facts • For the first time, life expectancy has gone down. • Most children today will not live as long as their parents. • Obesity usually leads to type II diabetes
