  6. SPECIAL EVENTS The Special Events Department is responsible for the management and organisation of various activities and events which will take place around the SOWSG in 2003. 4 Areas: Athlete Services Torch Run Final Leg Conferences Symposium

  7. Athlete Services • Art Exhibitions ‘Share the Feeling’ • Goal: To mount and display artwork by individuals with a learning disability from Ireland and from each of the 160 countries participating in Special Olympic Programs worldwide. • Where:Libraries and other civic buildings in Dublin and 160 Host Towns. • When: 7th – 29th June 2003.

Healthy Athlete The mission of the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete Programme is to improve each athlete’s ability to train and compete in Special Olympics. • There will be six programmes in 2003: • Optometry (Opening Eyes) • Dentistry (Special Smiles) • Audiology (Healthy Hearing) • Physiotherapy (FUNfitness) • Podiatry • Health Promotion

  9. Guests • Goal: To identify, invite, involve and entertain Guests with the aim of maximising the visibility of Special Olympics worldwide. What:Guests will participate in the Games by: • Attending sports. • Giving awards. • Hosting sports clinics and demonstrations. • Walking with a delegation at the Opening Ceremony. • Attending receptions, media interviews

Olympic Town • Goal: To provide athlete focussed, interactive entertainment for the athletes during the competition schedule. • Who: Olympic Town will be open to athletes and their coaches only. • What: The entertainment provided will include music, theatre, dance, internet café, arts and crafts.

  11. Athlete Entertainment • Goal: To provide nightly entertainment for the athletes during Games. • Where Tuesday 24th June – Blanchardstown S.C. Thursday 26th June – The Point

  12. Torch Run-Final Leg • The ‘Flame of Hope’ will be lit in Greece • Arrives Bangor on 13th June 2003 • International Team: 130 Law Enforcement officers (incl. Gardaí & PSNI and 10 SO Athletes • Irish Torch Run-1,500 Gardaí & PSNI – fundraising. • Ceremonies will be held in a number of towns en route: Host towns will also be included.

  13. Conference • HoD Seminar: July 11th-15th 2002 • Festival 2003: RDS Simmonscourt. Tented Village. Target audience: Public, Families, Media, Guests and Athletes. Content: Showcase for Sponsors, Game Partners and Official Suppliers, information centre and entertainment. • Receptions: No. of receptions taking place around the Games

  14. Receptions • 16 Receptions taking place during the games in 2003. • Include: Torch Run, Symposium, Healthy Athlete, Chairman’s Brunch, Parents, Families, Officials, Volunteers, Managers, Media, Host Town/Sponsors, Guests, Volunteers. • Numbers of invitees range from 200 to 15,000 people

  15. Symposium • Forum for Education • Belfast - 19th-20th June 2000 • Theme: Supporting Families. • Topics incl. Early intervention, education, employment and living. • 450+ attendees

  19. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ARENA • One of 3 Basketball venues • 530 athletes - 29 Male Teams - 16 Female Teams - 8 Unified Teams • Exclusive use - parking - both floors

  20. PLANNING • Draft CAD drawings in progress • Detailed design – Jan, Feb, Mar • Venue design complete: April, 2002 • Some contracts to be signed prior to that date

  21. CONSIDERATIONS • Sponsors of venues should think about: • Space required in venues - hospitality - sampling - displays • Signage
