  2. What is a charity? What is a social enterprise? Charity: an organisation operating for charitable purposes Social enterprise: an organisation established with the primary purpose of creating social impact, not through fundraising and grants, but through enterprise

  3. Definition of social enterprise “Businesses with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.” As with all businesses, they compete to deliver goods and services. The difference is that social and environmental purposes are at the very heart of what they do, and the profits they make are reinvested towards achieving those purposes. www.socialenterprisemark.org.uk

Legal formats: CLG: Companies Limited by guarantee (non-profit distributing), with or without charitable status CIC: Community Interest Companies IPS: Industrial and Provident Societies Co-op: Co-operatives LLC: Companies Limited by Shares LLP: Limited Liability Partnerships with a cap on income distribution

  7. Why a social enterprise? There is a limit to availability of philanthropic funds No need to fundraise (nobody doing likes this!) A business model that generates what you need You decide the agenda, and do it You are in control Customer feedback and engagement Sustainability and resilience
