  3. Conclusion with restated (NOT REPEATED) thesis Words can be more powerful than swords. The passionate words of Empress Theodora before the invasion of Constantinople changed the course of Roman history. Because of her strength and determination, not only was Constantinople victorious in battle, but the quality of life for women in Rome improved greatly under Theodora’s rule.

  9. Inspiration • As a boy, W.W. Jacobs listened to many tales told by sailors who had traveled around the world. These tales shaped his fiction stories. • One reason “The Monkey’s Paw” is so popular is it doesn’t sound like a story someone wrote. It sounds like an age-old tale made up by no one in particular and passed through the ages.

  12. What is a SUPERSTITION? • Superstition: An irrational belief arising from ignorance or fear.

  13. “The Monkey’s Paw” • In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” the White family is given a dried up monkey’s paw from a family friend. At first, the family looks at the paw as just some strange souvenir that may give the family some good luck. However, when the family wishes for $500 dollars they receive it as a settlement after their son’s death! The family now believes in the power of the paw…superstition and fear take over the rest of the surviving White family.

  14. Think of THREE superstitions/rituals we have in our society or in your family. You might think of superstitions within various cultures and in sports. In your notebooks, write out what the superstition is and what the belief/action is supposed to mean.

  15. Knocking On Wood It's a natural reaction for many to say "knock on wood" after making a statement they hope will come to fruition. This superstition is thought to come from an ancient belief that good, positive spirits live in trees. So, by knocking on a tree or object made of wood, it was believed you were directly calling on those spirits for protection.

  16. Your task: Due at the end of the period. Choose one of the following superstitions, and create a “history” for it. It must be at least one paragraph (5-7 complete sentences) long. Three seagulls flying together, directly overhead, are a warning of death soon to come. If a friend gives you a knife, you should give him a coin, or your friendship will soon be broken. When you are moving to a new home, never take the old broom with you. In Europe they say that if you have small ears it means you are a mean person, but if you have large ears you will have a generous nature. Ivy growing on a house protects the inhabitants from witchcraft and evil.
