  6. CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY • ALTERNATIVE TO TOTALITARIAN MONARCH: CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY • Constitutional –king shares power with elected legislature • England • Japan

  7. OLIGARCHY • Rule by a few people who get their power from wealth , social position or military power • Ex. Communist China, Sparta, Greece • Russia???

  8. DEMOCRACY—RULE IS BY THE PEOPLE • DIRECT- PEOPLE GOVERN AND MAKE DECISIONS FOR THEMSELVES • Ex. Athens, Greece • New England town meetings.

  9. DEMOCRACY-RULE BY THE PEOPLE • Representative/Indirect - people elect representatives to make decisions • Republic—voters hold sovereign power • Ex. USA, England, Germany, France

  10. Many of the dictatorships that began to decline turned to Democracies. . . • Totalitarian dictatorships and dictatorships around the world began to see a decline in the 1990s. • Democracies saw an increase in 1990’s.

  11. CHARACTERISTICS OF DEMOCRACY • INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY-Peopleshould have an equal opportunity to develop their talents and abilities

  12. Characteristics of DEMOCRACY • MAJORITY RULE WITH MINORITY RIGHTS- decisions made by the majority of voters in free elections are accepted

  13. Characteristics of DEMOCRACY • FREE ELECTIONS- gives people the chance to choose their leaders and to voice their opinions

  14. Characteristics of DEMOCRACY • COMPETING POLITICAL PARTIES- political parties give voters a choice

  15. Where is DEMOCRACY MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED? • Free enterprise-the opportunity to control one’s economic destiny • Countries with a large middle class • Stable economies • Educated public • Common values
