  1. Bryophytes, Molluscs, Porifera Nisha Jain, Dionne Sannen, Oriana Navarro, NamrataJethmalani, Michelle de Zeeuw, Ali Capriles

  2. Bryophyte

  3. What are they? Land plants that do not have vascular tissues

  4. They are separated into 3 main categories: • Moss • Liverwort • Hornwort

  5. What does this mean? Vascular Tissues are xylem and phloem They do nothave the “veins” that other plants do that transport food and water throughout the plant

  6. Examples

  7. Hornwort

  8. Coontail/ Anglo-Saxon Wort

  9. Crystalwort

  10. Crescent-cup liverwort

  11. Hair Cap moss

  12. White Tipped Moss

  13. What is special about Bryophytes?

  14. The don’t reproduce with seeds or flowers

  15. …Instead they have reproductive structure gametangia and sporangia.

  16. Essentially, they produce SPORES

  17. What is a spore? A small, usually single-celled reproductive body that is highly resistant to desiccation and heat and is capable of growing into a new organism

  18. Molluscs

  19. Features!

  20. Molluscs have such a varied range of body structures that it is difficult to find defining characteristics that apply to all modern groups.

  21. The two most universal features are a mantle with a significant cavity used for breathing and excretion, and the structure of the nervous system.

  22. 3 Main Body Parts: • Foot • Visceral Mass • Mantle

  23. Striking feature: use of the same organ for multiple functions.

  24. Ex: the heart and nephridia ("kidneys") are important parts of: reproductive system & circulatory and excretory systems • In bivalves, the gills both "breathe" and produce a water current in the mantle cavity, which is important for excretion and reproduction.

  25. Examples!

  26. Cuttlefish

  27. Slug

  28. Snail

  29. Octopus

  30. Nudibranchs

  31. Squid

  32. Fun Facts • >100,000 species=2nd largest phylum of animals • Largest marine phylum, comprising about 23% of all the named marine organisms.

  33. Porifera

  34. Commonly known as sponges

  35. There are 5,000 species of sponges!

  36. Classified under the Porifera phylum: • Hexactinellida (glass sponges) • Demospongiae • Calcarea (calcareous sponges)

  37. Example: Hexactinellida

  38. Example: Demospongiae

  39. Example: Calcarea (calcareous sponges)

  40. Favorite Sponge of All

  41. Features

  42. Have no main organs/tissues

  43. Unique Feeding System!

  44. No mouths!Tiny pores in their outer walls through which water is drawn.

  45. Cells in the wall of the sponge filter the nutrients needed!

  46. Pumped to other parts of the sponge through big openings!

  47. The cells preform many bodily functions which makes them appear more independent (comparing to other animal cells)

  48. Sponges can remold their bodies. Cells can move and change from one type to another
