  5. Real world application • Understanding binary fission can help save peoples lives. Knowing that a certain ingredient in a medicine can stop the cycle, will help kill it.

  6. Binary Fission • Asexual reproduction in prokaryotic cells • Happens by separation of the body

  7. First step of Binary Fission • Parent cell grows to maximum size and duplicates its chromosomes • Makes two copies of genetic material (DNA)

  8. Next step of Binary Fission • Cell grows • Increases space between the two duplicated chromosomes • In prokaryotes, a new cell wall is formed across the middle of the cell, dividing it

  9. Last step of Binary Fission • Daughter cells separate • A new cell is formed • Process repeats very quickly
