Lesson Plan: Understanding Media and Information Literacy Grade Level: 12 Duration: 5 class periods (45 minutes each session) Date: August 5 – 9, 2024 Objectives 1.Describe how communication is affected by media and information. 2.Editorialize on being a media and information literate individual. 3.Display cooperation and good rapport in class. Materials Needed •Projector and computer •Internet access •Whiteboard and markers •Handouts with selected articles and editorials •Rubrics for editorial writing •Group activity worksheets Day 1: Understanding Media and Information’s Impact on Communication 1. Introduction (15 minutes) •Activity: Quick Write oPrompt: "Think about a time when you received a piece of news through social media. How did it affect your understanding of the event?" oStudents write their responses individually. 2. Lecture and Discussion (30 minutes) •Topic: How Media and Information Affect Communication oPoints to cover: ▪The speed of information dissemination ▪The amount of information available ▪The quality and credibility of information ▪The role of social media in shaping public opinion ▪The impact of information overload Day 2 •Activity: Class Discussion (random – 5 minutes) oDiscuss students’ quick write responses. oEngage students with questions about their media consumption habits and perceptions. 3. Group Activity (30 minutes) •Activity: Case Study Analysis oInstructions: Divide the class into small groups. Provide each group with a case study about a major news event and how it was covered differently by various media outlets. oTasks: ▪Analyze how each media outlet presented the event. ▪Identify any biases or differences in perspectives. ▪Discuss how the coverage could affect public perception.

Homework (10 minutes) •Assignment: Read a handout with selected articles on media literacy and prepare to discuss key points in the next class. Day 3: Editorial Writing and Collaboration 1. Review and Discussion (15 minutes) •Activity: Discuss Homework oPrompt: "What did you learn about media literacy from the articles? Why is it important to be media and information literate?" oFacilitate a class discussion based on the readings. 2. Lecture (30 minutes) •Topic: Characteristics of a Media and Information Literate Individual oPoints to cover: ▪Critical thinking ▪Accessing and evaluating information ▪Understanding media forms and functions ▪Creating responsible media content ▪Ethical use of information ▪Recognizing bias and perspective Day 4 3. Editorial Writing (30 minutes) •Activity: Write an Editorial oInstructions: Each student writes an editorial on the importance of being a media and information literate individual. They should include: ▪Personal reflections ▪Examples from recent news events or personal experiences ▪The characteristics of a media and information literate person oRubric: Provide a rubric outlining criteria for evaluation, such as clarity, coherence, use of examples, and adherence to editorial format. 4. Peer Review and Cooperation (15 minutes) •Activity: Peer Review oInstructions: Pair up students to exchange and review each other’s editorials. Provide a peer review worksheet with specific questions to guide the feedback. oDiscussion: Encourage students to give constructive feedback and discuss their thoughts.
