The Delhi City • Capital city of India • One of the states of India called the “National Capital Territory” (NCT) of Delhi, headed by a Chief Minister • For urban pollution control measures, districts of adjoining states are taken into account - called the “National Capital Region” (NCR) • Considered as one of the highly polluted cities in the world, main problem being SPM

Types of Control Measures • Vehicle technology related • Fuel technology related • Measures for in-use vehicles • Other measures: • Augmentation of the public transport fleet to 10,000 • Build new Inter-state bus terminals at entry points to avoid pollution due to entry of inter-state buses. • Set up new stations and strengthen existing air quality monitoring stations for critical pollutants.
Vehicle & Fuel Technology Measures • Vehicle Technology: • Tighter emission standards for passenger cars, Euro II instead of Euro I • CNG mandatory for +8year old buses • After one year all buses on CNG • Replace all pre-1990 registration taxis and auto-rickshaws with new ones on CNG • Fuel Technology: • Lead phase out • Petrol & Diesel with < 0.05% Sulphur • Petrol with < 1% Benzene • Petrol with pre-mixed 2-T oil for 2-stroke engines • Adequate supply of CNG
In-use vehicle measures • Ban plying of +15 year old commercial vehicles • Setting up automated Inspection & Certification facilities for commercial vehicles by the Transport Department • Introduction of a comprehensive I&M programme in the private sector • Recent Delhi Govt order: Ban on plying of +15 year old 2-stroke 2-wheelers from 1-1-2001
