  9. Consistent Messages Guide Purpose of the Guide: ‘to assist those who provide disaster safety information to the general public’.

  10. Target audiences • ‘may include emergency managers, meteorologists, teachers, disaster (natural and human caused) educators, public affairs/public relations personnel, mitigation specialists, media personnel, and communicators’

  11. Development of the Guide ‘The Guide should be developed in consultation with the civil defence and emergency management sector and relevant stakeholders, such as scientific organisations dealing with hazards, emergency services, government departments and others, as appropriate.’

  12. Format of the Guide • A ‘living document’ presented in the format that will allow for continuous improvements, as experience and practice require

Timeline • Initial Talking About Disasters sections sent out to reference group co-ordinators – end of November 2007 • First draft of sections due back by March 2008 – extended to end of June due to Ruaumoko • And a major tsunami… • Last section completed two weeks ago, still some issues with peer review

  16. Where we are at • Final draft version expected by mid-September • Open for consultation end of September • Panel discussion at NIEMC December 4 2008 11:10 AM to 12:20 PM
