  3. Commandment #1 • If you do not want it shared with the world do not put it on the internet. • Even with privacy controls everything you post in part of the public record. • In this day and age it is quite easy to copy and paste information and even if you have privacy controls set up your friend who shared your post may not.

  4. Commandment #2 • Thou shall have a separate email between personal and professional life

  5. Commandment #2 • Keeping your personal and professional emails separate helps you manage the Online persona you would like to present. • Personal • Facebook • Tumblr • Pinterest • Journal/Blog • Professional • LinkedIn • Twitter • Blog

  6. Commandment #3 • Thou shall have a proper profile picture

  7. Commandment #3 • What using the default picture says about you. • Too lazy to get a good picture for your profile. • Will not finish work projects • Fix it by taking a good picture of yourself.

  8. Commandment #3 • What using a celebrity picture says about you. • Too lazy to get a good picture for your profile. • Takes credit for others work • Fix it by taking a good picture of yourself.

  9. Commandment #3 • What using an inappropriate, rude, or damaging picture says about you. • Damages your reputation • Lets people know you don’t care about yourself • Fix it by taking a good picture of yourself.

  10. Commandment #3 • What using a good appropriate picture says about you. • You care about your appearance • You are responsible and trustworthy

  11. Commandment #4 • Honor thy profile by completing it

  12. Commandment #4 • After your profile picture most people will look at what you have to say about yourself. Your profile is your opportunity to tell the world about you and how wonderful you are. • Consider mentioning: • Hobbies • Awards • Places you’ve visited • Things that you are proud of

  13. Commandment #5 • Honor thy mother, father, boss, professor, etc...

  14. Commandment #5 • Do you really want them to read all about the crazy weekend you had? Honor them by tailoring your posts and what you share. • I suggest the Grandma rule: If your Grandma wouldn’t want to read it don’t post it (at least not unregulated)

  15. Commandment #6 • Thou shall use privacy controls when available

  16. Commandment #6 Use privacy controls, lists, and other features to tailor your messages, pictures, or other activities to the appropriate audiences. • Separate your follows into groups to make this easier • Family • Professional • Friends • Close Friends

  17. Commandment #7 • Thou shall use your social media appropriately

  18. Commandment #7 • With all the different types of Social Media out there you need to make sure you are using them appropriately. Here are some examples: • Facebook – Most popular, great for sharing medium sized messages • Pinterest – Picture boards good for sharing visual ideas • Twitter – Short messages (140 character limit), great for updates and sharing short timely messages • LinkedIn – Professional Network, used for creating career related contacts

  19. Commandment #8 • Thou shall • Contribute!

  20. Commandment #8 • It’s not enough to just join a social network and leave it. In order to get the most from it you have to contribute. • DO: • Share your expertise • Contribute in a positive way • Help others • Follow Wheaton’s Law • DON’T: • Be a Troll • Feed the Trolls • Ignore cries for help • Cry wolf

  21. Commandment #9 • Thou shall not air dirty laundry

  22. Commandment #9 • Social media is not place to deal with private matters. • A good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn’t talk a subject in a crowded waiting room it’s not something that some be discussed across social media.

  23. Commandment #10 • Honor the share, retweet, repost, reblog, repin, etc...

  24. Commandment #10 • No one likes when they work hard on something only to have someone else take the credit for it. When you share, repost, reblog, repin, etc… you use the social network’s build crediting system that links back to the originator.

  25. Commandment #11 • Thy posts are public

  26. What can we help you with?
