  1. The cellular machinery requires a coninuous energy supply to do all the work of life. • The two types of cellular power stations are organelles called chloroplasts & mitochondria. • One harnesses light energy from the sun, and the other "unpacks" this captured energy into smaller packets that are useful for powering cellular work. Chloroplasts & Mitochondria *Compare and contrast the functions of chloroplasts and mitochondria

  2. The cellular machinery requires a continuous energy supply to do all the work of life.

  3. The two types of cellular power stations are organelles called chloroplasts & mitochondria.

  4. One harnesses light energy from the sun, and the other "unpacks" this captured energy into smaller packets that are useful for powering cellular work.

  5. Cellular Respiration The process by which cells make ATP

  6. Photosynthesis Process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and CHO

  7. Chloroplasts • Plants and algae (plant-like protists) harness light energy thru photosynthesis • Found only in Eukarya autotrophs/producers

  8. Chloroplasts Light Energy Chemical ENERGY Energy of Sugars water & carbon dioxide Found only in Eukarya autotrophs or producers

  9. Two membranes • Fluid filled space (stroma) • Disk shaped structures (thylakoids) • Stack of disks (granum) • Multiple stacks (grana)

  10. wo membranes Fluid filled space (stroma) Disk shaped structures (thylakoids) Stack of disks (granum) Multiple stacks (grana) Disk connecting membranes (lamellae)

  11. Choroplasts

  12. Chloroplasts Netrium digitus A freshwater protist

  13. Mitochondriasingular: mitochondrion In all eukaryotic cells, mitochondria perform cellular respiration

  14. Mitochondriasingular: mitochondrion • Sugar ATP • (adenosine triphosphate)

  15. Mitochondriasingular: mitochondrion Inall eukaryotic cells, mitochondria perform cellular respiration Sugar ATP (adenosine triphosphate)

  16. ATP Inall eukaryotic cells, mitochondria perform cellular respiration Sugar ATP (adenosine triphosphate)

  17. Mitochondriasingular: mitochondrion • Double membrane • Inner membrane has many folds .

  18. Mitochondriasingular: mitochondrion Inner membrane also has many enzymes for cellular respiration. MATRIX-Inner fluid filled space

  19. Mitochondriasingular: mitochondrion Two membranes Inner membrane is convoluted with myriad folds . Inner membrane also has many embedded enzymes for cellular respiration. Inner fluid filled space (matrix)

  20. Plant cells have both mitochondria and chloroplasts

  21. HOMEWORK • Draw a mitochondrion complete with interior structures and label each. Page 221 • Draw a chloroplast complete with interior structures and label each. Page 208 • BONUS for coloring neatly!!
