Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010. ‘Celebrating Learning in the Community’ Objectives • To develop initiatives designed to increase participation in learning and address underachievement and low skills levels amongst disengaged young people and young adults, including extra-curricula and ‘learning by stealth / learning can be fun’ initiatives. • To provide innovative learning opportunities with special regard to I.T. across all ages and abilities. • To seek out and respond to community needs in the area of learning support, including supporting community based organisations engaged in learning. • To undertake research that investigates barriers to learning and engagement. • To make effective use of existing community resources. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

3. Bradford Study Support Network. Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 During 2009-10, BSSN employed 2coordinators and 30 part-time tutors; both trained tutors and student-tutors. The student-tutors are also able to act as role-models for young people. • BSSN has delivered 2500 (+) learning sessions during 2009-10 across the age-ranges and abilities. • BSSN failed to acquire additional funds from BBC Children in Need for 2009-10, after receiving funds for 9 consecutive years. • The only remaining support for young people’s learning are provided through the Esmée Fairbairn Family Learning Project, DFID, matched funding from centres and BSSN Reserves. • The Family Learning Project completes in September 2010 and the Department of International Development (DFID) Project in March 2011. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 To be up-dated for April-August 2010 • Between September 2009 and March 2010 BSSN worked with 190 young people providing supported study, ‘learning-can-be-fun activities’, GCSE and A Level Exam Workshops and Super Saturdays. • Attendance increases in the 2nd half of the year as BSSN runs a Summer Programme, (see Summer Programme) • Funding for work with young people is the most serious challenge facing BSSN in 2011 as new funds must be raised before December 2010 if our work is to continue. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 • BSSN received a two grant from DFID, (2nd grant) to promote awareness of global health issues affecting women and young children. • Grange Technology College and Bradford University have played an active and successful role, as well as centres within the BSSN Network. • A number of power points on global issues have been produced. Those produced by young people and university students have reached a very high standard both in terms of content and I.T. skills. • Inter-generational learning was / is funded through DFID and the Family Learning Project. • All age groups also participated in the Healthy Living Project , including ‘Cooking on a Budget’ which was funded through Open Fields until March 2010. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 Adult learning has been supported by: • Bradford Learning Partnership’s NLDC programme and BMDC Commissioning (the latter also funded for 2010-2011). • BSSN has received NLDC and Commissioning of Learning Services funds over several years. • BMDC WNF ESOL Programme (also refunded during 2011) • Targeted Support Fund, administered by CNET, Bradford. Short term funding to address increased demand for learning services. • BMDC Trailblazer Programme delivering ‘embedded’ Literacy and Numeracy for individuals with housing needs, (funded to March 2011). Trailblazers has recently gained real momentum. The project highlights the increasing vulnerability experienced by all ages and communities in Bradford • Whenever relevant, learning is linked to ‘employability’. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

11. Bradford Study Support Network. Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 BSSN aims to provide holistic support that address barriers to learning and enable participation in the wider society. Examples of the problems faced by BSSN learners: • Homelessness, threatened by homelessness. • Domestic Violence / seeking refuge. • Marital breakdown, with potential immigration issues. • Few basic skills; literacy and numeracy needs. • Lack of security of status (asylum seekers). • Disaffection from school; low attainment levels. • Additional support some young people require, who have the potential to achieve high results, whose families lack sufficient English or did not have access to education. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 • Over this past year, BSSN has purposefully built on the ‘multiplier impact’ of integrating learning from different programmes as far as is possible. • Learners are able to practice their English language skills in different settings (e.g. ESOL and DFID). • None-core/ innovative learning focuses on widening learners’ horizons and increasing their participation in social issues and within the local community. • The Cookery and DFID projects, together with Family Workshops, have encouraged inter-generational learning and the exchange of skills, e.g. young people have I.T. skills beyond the capability of many adult learners. • On all our programmes we emphasise the importance of family learning and that parents who are interested and engaged in their children’s learning are more likely to enhance their children’s attainment levels and thereby their life-chances. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 Research: • BSSN was funded by Bradford Council (Innovation Fund) to conduct a survey on ‘Learning in the Community’ in 2009. 147 individuals completed a comprehensive 1:1 and small group survey. This survey has provided valuable insights into the learning needs, aspirations and interests of those living in disadvantaged areas. • BSSN contributed to a comprehensive survey conducted by NIACE on the role of learning for individuals who are/ were NEET Capacity Building: • BSSN delivers 90% of its services in other ‘grass-roots’ organisations. Their sustainability is therefore of paramount importance to BSSN. • BSSN staff and Management Committee: i) serve on other Committees within the Network; ii) have been directly involved in fund-raising initiatives with 3 organisations in 2009-10 and management restructures in 2 organisations during the same period. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk

15. Bradford Study Support Network. Annual Report, September 2009- August 2010 • BSSN is a member of the Anna Lindh Foundation of 43 European and Mediterranean countries. The Foundation promotes inter-cultural dialogue. Membership has extended BSSN’s networksand contacts. • In March 2010, Alex represented BSSN at an International Conference in Barcelona attended by some 500 delegates from organisations from across the Foundation’s network. BSSN was invited to run a working session at the Barcelona Conference. • Alex also represented BSSN on a Global Exchange to Jos, Nigeria in November 2009. BSSN has continued to develop the networks established on the Exchange; networks which are very relevant to the current DFID Project. www.bssn.org.uk team@bssn.org.uk
