Mac accounts • Coming into a job with a Mac on the desktop? • Want to use the Mac? • Have access to a Mac in a shared area like teachers’ lounge? • If so, you can get a personal Mac account on the computer you want to use. • A personal account keeps your work secure, separates your files from others’ City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

First step: Network/GroupWise • Get your GroupWise email and Windows Network accounts set up (see next slide) • Use GroupWise email on either Mac or Windows PCs • Web GroupWise client • GroupWise help in TLC workshops (www/ccsf/edu/tlc  training link)or Techdocs site (www.ccsf.edu/techdocs) City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

Get Network and GroupWise Accounts • Submit ITS Request for CCSF Network Login and GroupWise email form • For a form: Help Desk: 239-3711 or local ITS staff • Or: Attend a Technology Learning Center workshop: • Getting Your Accounts/Tech Orientation or GroupWise Web Basics • Workshop Schedules at www.ccsf.edu/tlcTraining City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

Your computer accounts • As a result of submitting the form or attending a Getting Your Accounts or GroupWise Basics Workshop: • Account on CCSF network (from Windows PCs) • Allows login to any Windows Fac/Staff computer, any campus • Enables Windows access to your own 100 MB CCSF network storage space on any networked CCSF campus • GroupWise email account • Timeline: About 1 week from completion or submission of online certificate City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

Mac access accounts In addition to Windows network and GroupWise email accounts: • To get accounts to log into specific Macs:identify locations for Mac account creation • Contact: • Local ITS staff (campuses) or • Sue Bettinger, Mac support: sbetting@ccsf.edu • Or Help Desk: 239-3711 City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  7. Logging in: Logistics • What is your login name? • What is your first time password? • Do you have to change your password? • How do I change my password? City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  8. User IDs (Login names) • Your Login / User ID is the same as on GroupWise and the CCSF network(and – for old-timers – fog): • The first letter of your first name • Followed by up to 7 letters of your last name, for a total of up to 8 letters (all lower case) • Common names like Wong or Johnson may have to use a middle initial as the second letter City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  9. User ID examples • For Franco Bonnelli, the User ID / login name would be fbonnell • For Sharon Lo, the login name would be slo • Michael A. Johnson, however, might bemjohnson ormajohnso(if another M Johnson already existed) City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  10. First time Mac passwords • The initial password is the same as your login • You aren’t forced to change your password • For security: Change Passwords!Anyone can guess your login name! City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  11. Changing Passwords • In the Finder • Click Apple Menu > • System Preferences > • My Account • Change password City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  13. Logging on and Security Security • Logging on gives you your own OS X home directory and documents folder • Keeps docs you save separate from others’ work • Safe and easy to back up: drag contents of documents folder to a blank CD City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  14. Responsibilities Log off a shared Mac: • Leaving yourself logged in  other folks save to your desktop or docs folder • Your documents exposed to anyone at the computer City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center

  15. Logging off vs. Powering down • Log off shared computers  Others don’t have to restart • Click the Apple menu • Then click Log off • Leaves the computer on -ready for others to log in without powering up City College of San Francisco: Technology Learning Center
