The Fort of Gandikota

The great thing about Gandi Kota is that while it is a tourist attraction it is not yet a major hub so you can go and discover a lot of great things to do, points of interest and nature without too many other people ruining the impact.

  1. In 1123 Gandi Kota was founded by Kapa Raja. The famous fort of Gandikota got its name from the nearby gorge, in Telugu gorge is gandi. The gorge is between the Gandkota hills or the Erramala range and threw this flows the river Pennar. The fort spreads across a large area and is surrounded by deep valleys, boulders and hard-to-pass hills, which is why it made a great location for a secure fort. It can only be reached coming from one direction so it was very defensible.

  2. A smaller version of the grand canyon - The valley, the Pennar river, the rocks, the views, this is a spectacular place to visit just for the natural wonder of it all. For Indians who have always wanted to see the Grand Canyon in the US, come to see this. It is smaller of course, but it is no less amazing to see and experience. You can not just trek there, you can go on the river, and there are several adventure sports to do while you take in the views if you like to be doing things.

  3. Structures to explore - There are several structures to explore and learn about. There is the granary where they once stored food for the fort in case of any kind of emergency. There is a large masjid and the Madhavaraya Temple next to it as well, a lovely sign of the diversity in India and in fact, there is a yearly heritage festival in Gandikota celebrating Indian heritage, diversity and culture. There is also a separate jail from the fort where past rules would punish and imprison criminals and wrongdoers in the land.

  4. A place where everyone can find something to enjoy - The great thing about Gandi Kota is that while it is a tourist attraction it is not yet a major hub so you can go and discover a lot of great things to do, points of interest and nature without too many other people ruining the impact. It will not stay like this for long though as efforts are being made to make it better used. You can explore wildlife and birds, trek, climb, boat, zipline, explore, discover and learn a whole lot here. Whether you are a nature lover, historian, photographer or adventure seeker this is a brilliant trip.

  5. Where to stay - At the moment there is just a couple of options for places to stay in Gandikota itself. You can stay at that resort, or you can camp. The resort is only 500m from the fort and the campsite a bit further. The campsite is with a company that offers adventure sports and such. At the resort the food is good and the place is clean and comfortable. You can relax with friends and family and enjoy the evening breeze and get ready for a morning of activity or more fort exploring. If you want other options you would have to stay in the nearest town and then drive back which is about 30km. That is also where the closest hospital and conveniences are.
