  8. Critical IssueThe importance of majoring in Hotel Management • We are seeing a slight decline in the number of students selecting to major in hotel management • Why should Admissions Reps advise students with an interest in possibly working in a hotel to select to major in Hotel Management?

  9. First: Size Matters!

  10. Hilton Hotels 3600+ hotels in 81 countries 10 different brands Opened 302 new hotels in 2009 900 more hotels in pipeline Intercontinental Hotels 4400 hotels in 100 countries 9 different brands Will double their 131 hotels in China by 2015 15 new hotels in development just in New York Wyndham Hotels 7090 Franchised Hotels in 100 countries 11 brands Marriott Hotels 3400+ hotels in 70 countries 17 different brands, including 2 new ones for luxury boutique and independent properties Will double portfolio in Europe by 2015 The major hotel firms drive the worldwide Hospitality & Tourism Industry

  11. Second: Jobs Matter!

  12. Hotels are where the jobs are • Full-service hotels can, and do, employ students graduating from every major in The Hospitality College • Graduates communicating back with us say that a majority of students who major in Travel, Tourism and/or Hospitality Management get jobs and have successful careers in hotels • The hotel industry is experiencing a recovery from the recent recession, with a growing number of internships being offered to students and a number of companies again initiating their manager-in-training positions for our graduates

  13. Many people are unaware of the sheer number of employees in varied positions employed in a hotel • Some facts about the Sheraton-Boston Hotel • 530 full-time employees • 58 full-time managers • HR/Training Employees – 5 • Sales/Marketing Employees – 39 • Accounting/Finance Employees – 16

  14. Lodging Industry Trend(Source: STR Global)

  15. Third: Preparation Matters!

  16. What students don’t receive if they major in something other than hotel but then work in a hotel • Hotel Food & Beverage Operations • Hotel Food & Beverage Controls • Front Office Management, with the operation of an advanced property management system embedded in this course • Revenue Management • Property Operations (engineering & housekeeping) • Hotel Internship

  17. In conclusion: If an incoming student thinks they may want to work in a hotel we would advise them to major in Hotel & Lodging rather than in the more general Travel, Tourism & Hospitality.
