  5. Untuk mempermudah subnetting awalnya kita harus melihat LAN mana yang membutuhkan banyak host (prefixnya sedikit). Penyebaran IP address akan lebih mudah jika kita memulai dari yang terbesar. Jika kasus subnetting VLS seperti di atas akumulasikan blok mana yang lebih banyak membutuhkan HOST dan selesaikan subnetting di dalam blok tersebut sebelum pindah ke blok yang lainnya. VLSM sangat bermanfaat untuk mengorganisir WAN yang membutuhkan banyak host, sehingga mengurangi kemungkinan terdapat IP address yang sama.
