  4. Stress • The process by which we perceive respond to certain events, called stressors, that we appraise as threatening more challenging. Chapter 14 stress and health

  5. General adaptation syndrome (GAS) • Selye’s concept of the body’s adaptive response to stress in three stages. • Alarm • Resistance • Exhaustion Chapter 14 stress and health

  11. Coping • Alleviating stress using emotional, cognitive, or behavioral methods. Chapter 14 stress and health

  12. Problem focused coping • Attempting to alleviate stress directly-by changing the stressor or the way we interact with that stressor. Chapter 14 stress and health

  13. Emotion focused coping • Attempting to alleviate stress by affording or ignoring a stressor and attending to emotional needs related to one’s stress reaction. Chapter 14 stress and health

  14. Aerobic exercise • Sustained exercise that increases heart and lung fitness; they also alleviate depression and anxiety. Chapter 14 stress and health

  15. Biofeedback • A system for electronic league recording, amplifying, feeding back information regarding a subtle psychological state, such as blood pressure or muscle tension. Each Chapter 14 stress and health
