  3. What is the American Civil War? • A war fought a long time ago when some of the states wanted to leave the United States of America.

  4. Why did they fight? • People in the South wanted to have slaves • People in the North thought slavery was wrong.

  5. President Lincoln Said slavery was wrong.

  6. 1860 • Some states left or seceded from the United states: South Carolina Alabama Florida Mississippi Louisiana Texas Georgia

  7. The Southern states called themselves The Confederate States of America.

  8. Jefferson Davis was elected president of the Confederate States.

  9. The Southern states dressed in grey uniforms The Northern states dressed in blue uniforms Union Confederate North South

  13. “Stonewall” Jackson • Southern General “Stonewall” Jackson got his nickname during Battle of Bull Run. General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson

  16. Emancipation Proclamation • Lincoln wrote that all slaves in the rebelling sates of the confederacy would be “forever free”. • Signed January 1, 1863

  17. The Tide Turns • General for Confederacy. Robert E. Lee

  18. Battle of Gettysburg • Bloodiest battle of Civil War • Lasted 3 days • Called the turning point of the war

  19. Lincoln elected president again. • Nov. 8, 1864 Lincoln elected • The next week Sherman burned Atlanta.

  20. General Sherman • Appointed by Grant to march throughout the South from the Mississippi River to the coast of Georgia. • He marched for a year • Burned Atlanta

  21. Lee surrenders • April 9, 1865 Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, VA.
