Some of the Important Facts about 220 Volt Air Conditioner Voltage is one of the important factors to consider when choosing an air conditioner, as you want to make sure that it is compatible with the electrical outlets in your home. Most air conditioners run on 120-volt on a standard outlet in the US, and 220 volts for heavy-duty outlets and abroad. The cooling efficiency of a 220 volt air conditioner can be determined by the amount of British Thermal Units (BTUs) it has. BTU is the standard measurement for thermal heat, and it takes 1BTU to reduce the temperature of a pound of water in a minute. So, a 120-volt AC will typically have 5,000 to 14,000 BTU, and 220-volt ACs will provide 15,000 to 23,000 BTU. The amount of BTU will be critical when it comes to the size of your room. So, take time to measure the area that needs to be cooled before you decide to buy a 220 volt air conditioner. However, bigger is not always better, so you will need to consider an air conditioner that is sized just right for your room. A powerful 15,000 BTU AC will be inefficient in a 100-square foot room, as it will result in uneven cooling and run on cycles that are too short, while a 5,000 BTU unit in a 1,000-square foot room will have difficulty keeping the area cool. A 220 volt air conditioner will require a large three-pronged outlet, which is often meant for heavy- duty large appliances. If your room is big and you need a 15,000 BTU AC, consider having a 220-volt outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Avoid forcing the wrong voltage into an outlet with a lower voltage, or you risk damaging the air conditioner and your electrical system. Both 220-volt and 120-volt ACs will be equally efficient when it comes to running cycles that are similarly long, as they will require roughly the same amount of energy. However, they will become inefficient if you fail to place them right. Keep in mind that a 120-volt AC will be inefficient and use up too much energy when in a room that is bigger than it, and a 220-volt unit will not be efficient when placed in a small room.
