  1. Uses and Applications of Step-Down Voltage Transformer There are times when you will need to purchase or use a 110-volt appliance in a 220-volt country. The need typically arises when you are from the US and you need to travel abroad to a place that uses 220 volts in their electrical sockets. In that case, you need to make sure that you have a step-down voltage transformer. It is plugged into an electrical socket and it will step down the 220-volt electricity to make it safe to run the 110-volt appliance or electronic device. You will also need this transformer if you are migrating or moving to a 220-volt country with 110-volt appliances. There are many different uses for a step-down voltage transformer. Apart from stepping down the 220 volts mains to accommodate 110-volt devices, it can be used for surge protection. That said, be sure to identify the wattage of your 110-volt devices, so you can purchase a step-down converter in a size that is appropriate for them. Keep in mind that some appliances may require a converter with two to three times their regular wattage when they are switched on. Examples include TVs, laser printers, motors, and power tools. The extra wattage will serve as a safety cushion for the power surge. That way, the appliances will not be damaged and they will continue to function efficiently and properly without affecting the voltage transformer’s health. There are many other uses for a step-down voltage transformer. It may be practical for stepping down the voltage to operate a transistor radio or to charge mobile phones. Welding equipment, inverters, UPS devices, and power distribution equipment will also require a step-down voltage converter to keep them functioning at an optimum state. You can purchase a step-down voltage transformer online. Consider doing so at least a few weeks or a month before you leave to travel abroad with your 110-volt devices and appliances. That way, you can be sure that it will arrive on time. If you are not sure whether to step down or step up on the voltage, you may consider getting a two-way converter, which can do both. It can also be useful if you purchased 220-volt appliances and you want to use them when you come back to America.
