  1. April 12, 2017 Experts Debunk the Most Common Myths and Misconceptions about Surrogacy Image 1: These Myths about Surrogacy Might Stop You from Starting a Family For some couples, having their own children is easier said than done. Some of these women suffer from medical conditions that prevent them from attempting pregnancy, while others have simply exhausted all other options yet still can’t carry a pregnancy to term. In the past few years, surrogacy has been one of the most popular options for couples having trouble with pregnancy. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology has revealed that the number of babies born through surrogates doubled between 2004 and 2008. Despite this, some people remain wary of surrogacy, mostly due to false beliefs about the process. Let experts dispel and contradict these myths and misconceptions about the process. Page | 1

  2. The child will be related to the surrogate. While this is true for a traditional surrogacy, you also have the option to create an embryo with your own eggs. This arrangement is also known as gestational surrogacy, wherein the baby won’t share genetics with the surrogate. Friends or relatives make for a great surrogate. True, you might feel more comfortable knowing that a trusted person carries your baby. Take note, though, that choosing a surrogate isn’t as simple as it sounds. Surrogates are screened to meet certain qualifications before being allowed to carry a child. In certain cases, going for independent surrogates may even lead to legal issues. To make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible, it’s best to find a surrogate from agencies instead. Creating an emotional bond with my baby won’t be possible. Others believe that surrogacy makes it impossible for mothers to bond with their would-be children. There’s no question about the need to forge an emotional bond between a mother and her child. Recent studies, however, indicate that this bond is created once the child is born, and not during pregnancy. In fact, a Cambridge University study suggests that surrogacy actually encourages positive relationships between mother and child. Many intended mothers even feel an immediate connection with their newborn. Surrogates only do it for the money. Contrary to popular belief, surrogate mothers have earnest interest in helping others start a new family. The compensation they receive doesn’t go straight to their pockets – their salary actually covers expenses, time, effort, and health risk that come with the surrogacy process. You might even be surprised to meet surrogates who have full-time careers! Surrogates must meet a stringent list of qualifications, and candidates motivated by money can be disqualified. Page | 2
