  2. What is a Socratic Seminar?

  3. Socratic Seminar Guidelines for Greatness • Listen carefully. • Cite the text and others. • Ask for clarification. Don’t stay confused. • Invite and allow others to speak. • YOU are responsible for the greatness of the seminar!

Seminar Sentence Starters • “In the text it said ____________” • “I agree/disagree with _______ because ___________” • “The author wrote ________________” • “You mentioned ___________… could you tell me more about that?” • “I didn’t understand exactly what ________ meant when he/she said ____________. Do you mind explaining?” • “I understand what you said about __________, but I disagree because __________.”

Socratic Seminar Roles • Task Master: leads discussion by reading questions to the group, bring conversation back on track if it leads too far away from topic. • Timekeeper: tracks time throughout seminar • Comment Tracker: tallies comments for one or more speakers • Quote Tracker: tallies comments use text evidence for one or more speakers • Key Point Person: summarizes and records key points, comments, and quotes made by speakers (usually on chart paper or SmartBoard) in order to review after seminar.

Pre-Work Reflection Seminar • Use your Healthy Lifestyle Log to help jot down thoughts about the following questions: • Were there any days when you were able to stay on task more often than other days? Why do you think that happened? • Were there any days when you were able to follow school rules more often than other days? Why do you think that happened? • Were there any days when you were more tired than other days? Why do you think that happened? • Were there any days when you completed more work or completed work at a higher level than other days? Why do you think that happened? • What thoughts did you have about your diet and exercise over the past two weeks?

Food Labels: The Only Thing You Need to Know • In what ways are food marketers trying to trap, or trick, the buyers? • Why should you avoid foods with ingredients that you can’t pronounce? • What can we learn from the order of the ingredients listed on a package? • What ingredients should we try to avoid?
