Definitions and Usage • in-, il-, im-, OR ir-: not, without; in, into, towards, inside The impossibility of Dad, my biggest cheerleader, missing my big game told me there was something wrong. • inter-: between, among • James interspersed details into his paper with expertise and style, making his reader engage with information he or she never would have otherwise. • intra-: inside, within • Former high school athletes often participate in intramural sports within their college or university to fill the void of the competitive sport they left behind.

What is the tone? * Think about each word’s connotation and the overall tone of the poem and draw the images in your mind on a separate sheet of paper. Be as descriptive as possible in your drawings; it will help you interpret the poet’s purpose and tone. Future I’m coming closer and closer to the date, Feeling overwhelmed at its imminence… It interferes with my concentration, My intracranial thoughts impossible to stop. I’m incapable of focusing for more than an intermittent stretch. It seems completely illogical to worry about my future, but here I am, Ultra-terrified at this new development in my life: Interacting with an influx of new people; developing my interpersonal skills I know I can’t stay indecisive long; I don’t have the time.

What connotations help you understand them? * Think about each word’s connotation (and prefix meanings if applicable) as you respond; it directly connects to voice and tone.
