Understanding Chip Board Values: Positive, Negative, and Zero Dynamics

Explore the mechanics of a chip board system featuring black and red chips, each with designated values. In this system, black chips denote positive values, while red chips indicate negative values. The concept of "zero" chips, which consist of a black and a red chip, allows for balance without affecting the overall value on the board. Learn how to effectively manage your chips by creating or eliminating zeros to achieve desired outcomes, alongside practical examples and equations to enhance your understanding.

  1. The Chip Board

  2. This is a BLACK chip. It has a value of POSITIVE 1. The Chip Board This is a REDchip. It has a value of NEGATIVE1.

  3. This is a BLACK chip. It has a value of POSITIVE 1. The Chip Board This is a REDchip. It has a value of NEGATIVE1.

  4. ZEROs are “free”. Any time you can make a zero, you can make it disappear without changing the value of your board. This is a ZERO. It consists of one BLACK chip and one RED chip. Any time you need chips, you may take as many zeroes as you would like. The Chip Board

  5. + -4 = +3 -1 The Chip Board -1 +3 + -4 =

  6. - -4 = +3 The Chip Board But we don’t have any red chips, so we need to get them. We can get 4 red chips by taking 4 zeroes. Subtract 4 red chips +3 - -4 =

  7. - -4 = +3 +7 The Chip Board +7 Now, we have 4 red chips, so we can take away 4 red chips. +3 - -4 =

  8. Try these on your board: +5 + -3 = -4 + -3 = -3 - +2 = -3 - -2 =

  9. Try these on your board: +2 -7 -5 -1 +5 + -3 = -4 + -3 = -3 - +2 = -3 - -2 =
