  5. International Memberships A cooperation aggrement between Turkey and ESA entered into force on September 2006 Turkey is a founding member of Asia-Pasific Space Technology Cooperation Organization, APSCO TUBITAK-UZAY is representing Turkey in APSCO CEOS Membership ISPRS Sustaining Member 5

  6. Project Groups • Satellite Technologies Group • Established in 1998 to develop small satellite technologies in Turkey • Currently, 33 staff work in this group • Other Project Groups support STG • Communication Systems and Computer Networks Group • VLSI Design Group • Electronic System Design Group • YAKUT - Computer Vision, Speech Processing, Pattern Recognition and Remote Sensing Group 6

  7. Satellite Technologies Group Satellite Projects • BiLSAT Project-Completed • Fulfilled with a budget around 13.4 million USD to establish all necessary infrastructure, ip rights, education etc. about LEO Micro satellites in cooperation with SSTL of Surrey University, UK. • A satellite, so-called BILSAT was designed, built and launched on September 2003 to LEO. • RASAT Project • Second LEO EO Satellite • To be designed and manufactured by TÜBİTAK-UZAY 7

  8. Satellite Technologies Group Satellite Projects • Smaller Research and Development Projects • BİLGE (On board computer) • ALP (Intelligent Lithium Battery) • Orbit propagator • GEZGİN-2 • X-Band Communication System • Ground Station Software Suite 8

  9. BiLSAT Project Objective • To acquire necessary skills required to design, manufacture and test of small satellites • Establish required infrastructure • Train people • Acquire necessary know-how • Acquire necessary skills to manage a satellite project • To launch and operate a LEO EO satellite • A “start point” for future LEO satellite projects 9

  10. BiLSAT Project The project covers: • The satellite • Design, manufacture, test, insurance, launch and comissioning • Groundstation • Satellite control ground station • Infrastructure • Satellite test and integration labs • Design office • Know-how transfer • Turkish team worked with SSTL team in close cooperation • Hands on experience 10

  11. BiLSAT Project BiLSAT Specifications • Mass: 129 kg • Orbit: 686 km, SSO • 3-axis controlled • On board propulsion • Imaging system • 26.7 m MSI (red,blue,green,NIR) • 12.6 m PAN • Store and forward comms • Research and Development payloads 11

  12. BiLSAT Project Multi Spec Image Sample The Turkish Rep. of Northern Cyprus; Oct 3rd, 2003, 4:06 UTC 12

  13. BiLSAT Project Turkish Additional Payloads 13

  14. BiLSAT Project GEZGİN Image with compression rate at 0.838% (120 times) Uncompressed Image 14

  15. BiLSAT Project • COBAN (Multispectral Imager): One of the first two TUBITAK-SPACE designs proved in orbit 15

  16. BiLSAT Project BiLSAT-DMC • Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) • Algeria – Alsat • Nigeria – Nigeriasat • Turkey – BILSAT • UK – UK-DMC • China – ChinaDMC • Each member operates his own satellite • Operated in coordination • Daily coverage • Free data for disaster management • Member of “International Charter” 16

  17. RASAT Follow-on Satellite Project: RASAT • Funded by State Planning Office as a development project for a LEO EO satellite with GSD = 7.5 m • Main imaging system was procured from R. of Korea • By successfull completion of this project: • New payloads will have been tested in space • First LEO EO satellite designed and manufactured totally in Turkey will have been launched • Infrastructure and skills about LEO satellites will have been improved 17

  18. Remote Sensing Projects • Platform identification on the sea, using hi-res satellite imagery • NOAA HRPT Receiving Station and Archive-Recently quitted • Acquired through NATO TU-REMOSENS Project, operated from 1996 to 2006. Provided imagery to Turkish users. • TU-REMOSENS • Snow coverage monitored during the winter season • Water equivalent of snow was estimated • Pipeline rehabilitation monitoring • Use of RS techniques to monitor the success of rehabilitation of Turkey section of Baku-Tibilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (1000km) • Coastal zone small format aerial photograpy • Low cost aerial photography, for frequent and high reslolution monitoring • Multispectral imager development for environmental uses for use with the aerial platforms 18

  19. “Build-up a Test Field in Salt Lake for Absolute Radiometric Calibration” Project National funded project The initial funding of the project for the required equipments such as sun-photometer, BRDF system, spectrometer is financed by TUBITAK. We are open to collaborations and would like to have it as an internationally recognizedtest site. Salt Lake, Terra 29.05.2006 19

  20. “Build-up a Test Field in Salt Lake for Absolute Radiometric Calibration” Project • A high-reflectance to reduce the impact of atmospheric errors Surface type: Saline lake It is extremely saline and during the summer, most of water in the lake dries up and exposes an average of 30 cm thick salt layer. The surface is uniform and bright • Higher elevation reduces the amount of atmospheric aerosols Elevation: 905 m • Size:It has an area of 1,500 km² 20

  21. “Build-up a Test Field in Salt Lake for Absolute Radiometric Calibration” Project • Accessibility of the site 150 km Location: 38 50’N, 33 20’E Salt Lake and vicinity 21

  22. “Build-up a Test Field in Salt Lake for Absolute Radiometric Calibration” Project High probability of cloud free days. 22

  23. “Build-up a Test Field in Salt Lake for Absolute Radiometric Calibration” Project Lack of vegetation so seasonal dynamics are minimal. Location far from the sea to minimize the influence of atmospheric water vapor. 23

  24. “Build-up a Test Field in Salt Lake for Absolute Radiometric Calibration” Project RASAT Radiometric Correction Field Study Field Campaign Determine the metodology BRDF measurements Radiative Transfer Code ... Complete the required equipments .... Analysis 2007 summer 2008 summer 2009 summer • Determine the coordinates of test area • Meteorological measurements • Analysis of the area 24
