  4. The Book About people, not technology. How people use technology to: • connect with others who have similar interests • accomplish widespread goals

  5. How is this a novel concept? These technologies are: • becoming easier to use • being adopted by “ordinary people” Example: grandparents using Kodak Photo gallery

  6. What needs are these new technologies meeting? Moving from passive to interactive

  7. Next, examples of ordinary people using easier technologies to find people with similar interests and accomplish widespread goals

  8. Case Study: Dean for America People: US Voters Technology: websites, blogs, wikis, web services (Meetup), snailmail Interest: Democratic Party Goals: Get Dean elected

  10. Lessons Learned • Both the Dean campaign and the MMM combined the “Living Web” and “old school” media and publicity methods. • Even with the best tools, we can’t eliminate the human factor

  11. Suggestions for creating a social network • Make it easy to contribute thoughts/ideas • Minimal barriers to entry • Organize all your publishing (content) across multiple media channels • RSS • Use blogs externally and internally • Internal: Knowledge blogs • Listen to your users

  12. Decentralization vs. Hierarchy • We are seeing the emergence of new form of laterally organized, network-driven groups • This represents a challenge to the hierarchical, corporate style organizations

  13. Questions for discussion • What problems, if any, do you foresee in the use of these technologies to create social networks? • Are any of you members of an online community? • Can anyone think how the Katrina effort used the internet and web technologies?
