  1. The Love of Many Will Grow Cold

  2. Introduction We all have experienced the bitter freezing cold temperatures the last few days. It can leave us without feeling, lethargic, and apathetic. The same thing can happen to us spiritually. In the middle of giving signs of God’s judgment on Jerusalem Jesus warned, “Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:13)

  3. Introduction Only by enduring to the end could those Christians expect to be saved from the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. If we are going to escape God’s eternal wrath we must not let our love grow cold but persevere through the trials we face so that we can enjoy eternal bliss. (Matthew 22:37-39; Romans 2:7) In this lesson we will examine three things that we must not let our love grow cold for.

  4. Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold for Your Spouse Most have a good start but unresolved conflicts occur, tempers flare, and one spouse gives the other the cold shoulder treatment. Instead of living joyfully with their spouse, (Proverbs 5:15-18) they consider the flattering, beautiful, immodestly dressed woman or sympathetic man. (Pr. 7:10ff) But the forbidden fruit of adultery will not bring satisfaction but instead pain, shame, and destruction to their souls. (Pr. 7:27)

  5. Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold for Your Spouse Husbands must remember their obligation to love their wives sacrificially as Christ loved the church and be tender towards them. (Ephesians 5:25-27; 1 Peter 3:7) As the church is subject to Christ, the wife is to submit graciously to their own husband and respect him. (Eph. 5:22-24, 33) If you remember what Christ has done for you, you shouldn’t have a problem with your love growing cold for your spouse.

  6. Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold for the Church Christ Died For When brethren are “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, unloving, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” we may be tempted to let our love grow cold for the church Christ died for but instead we should turn away from them. (2 Tim. 3:1-5; 2 John 1:9-11) We must fervently love our brethren. We are family! (1 Pt. 1:22-25; 2:17; 1 Tim. 3:15) When we do, it gives evidence to others that we are His disciples. (John 13:34-35)

  7. Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold for the Church Christ Died For But what happens when there are trials, problems, and divisions among brethren? It maybe tempting to grow weary in doing what is right and quit but instead we should continue to be zealous, love one another, and humbly resolve any conflicts with the truth. (Romans 12:10-21) Don’t let your love grow cold so that you are bitter, angry, & hateful but be kind, tender-hearted, forgiving each other. (Ep. 4:31-32)

  8. Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold for the Lost With our love for the truth which tells us to hate sin (Ps. 119:104) we may be guilty of hating the lost sinner and therefore not care about them. But “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son”(John 3:16) “God demonstrates His own love toward us that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8)

  9. Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold for the Lost Jesus hated sin but never let His love grow cold for the lost on this earth but died to save those who mocked, ridiculed, and eventually had him crucified. (Luke 23:34) Many of those cold blooded murderers obeyed the Lord and were saved. (Acts 2:36-41; 47) Jesus loved you and His love should compel you to preach the soul saving gospel to people who are headed for eternal torment. (2 Cor. 5:14; Rom. 1:16; Mark 9:43-48)

  10. Conclusion The cold weather may leave us feeling lethargic and apathetic but God forbid that we should let our love grow cold towards our spouse, brethren, and the lost. Is your love growing colder or does it continue to boil over with enthusiasm in these areas? If you realize that your love is growing colder so that you have lost your first love you can repent of your sins and do the deeds you did at first. (Revelation 2:5)
