  1. BellworkMay 1, 2014 • Guess what? • WE ARE IN THE HOME STRETCH!! • We have talked a lot about Martin Luther King, JR., do you know about any other leaders during the Civil Rights Movement? • I am sure that you have all heard of at least one…he was mentioned in class already.

  2. Before we get to other leaders lets get some other important information first…

  3. The Right to Vote • SNCC organize a large demonstration in Selma, Alabama • Protested denial of African American’s right to vote • Police attacked the marchers, brining the cause more attention • On Mach 15, 1965 Johnson made a televised speech urging the passing of a voting rights bill • In August Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law • Gave the federal gov’t the power to force local officials to allow African Americans to register to vote

  4. Now, let’s get to those other influential individuals

  5. Malcolm X • Many were growing tired of the slow progress that was being made • Malcolm X, a leader of the Nation of Islam, emerged as an important new voice • Criticized the civil rights goal of integration • Thought the best way to achieve justice was to separate African Americans from whites. • His support grew, but his stance began to change

  6. Malcolm X • Instead of racial separation he called for • “a society in which there could exist honest white-black brotherhood” • Let’s pause…. • What do you think about Malcolm X’s stance change? • Soon after he was killed • Even after his death he continued to influence the civil rights movement

  7. Black Power • Stokely Carmichael became leader of the SNCC advanced the idea of Black Power • What is Black Power? • Philosophy of racial pride that said African Americans should create their own culture and political institutions • Rejected by the NAACP • Had a huge impact on the Civil Right Movement

  8. Black Panther Party • Began in Oakland, California • Symbolized a growing tension between African Americans and urban police • Urban Riot • Summer of 1965 in Watts section of LA • Lasted one week • 34 people died and much of Watts was burned to the ground

  9. Assassination • April 4, 1968 • Memphis, Tennessee • MLK shot and killed • Set of more than 100 riots all over the country
