  3. Nutrition • The process by which the body takes in and uses food. • Enjoying a wide variety of healthful foods is an important part of good nutrition.

  4. The Importance of Good Nutrition • Good Nutrition enhances your quality of life and helps prevent disease. It provides you with the calories and nutrients your body needs for a maximum energy and wellness.

  5. Calories • Calories are units that measure the energy used be the body and the energy that foods supply to the body. • This energy fuels everything you do, from exercising and playing sports to doing your homework and talking with friends.

  6. Nutrients • Nutrients are substances in food that your body needs to grow, to repair itself, and to supply you with energy. • Making healthy food choices will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to help you look your best and perform at your peak.

  7. What influences your food choices? • Why do you choose the foods you do? • Taste … If you don’t like it , no matter how healthy it it, you probably won’t eat it.

  8. Hunger vs. Appetite • Hunger is a need for food, while appetite is a desire for food. • Hunger – Is an unlearned, inborn response. It is a natural physical drive that protects you from starvation… When your stomach is empty its walls contract, stimulating nerve endings. The nerves signal your brain that your body needs food. When you eat the walls of your stomach are stretched and are no longer stimulated.

  9. Appetite • Appetite is a desire, rather than a need, to eat. • The physical need for food isn’t the only reason people eat. People eat just to be “social”, or because the smell of fresh bread overtakes you and you just have to have a bite! In such cases you are eating in response to appetite rather than hunger.

  10. Do your emotions affect when and what you eat? • Yes… You eat when you are stressed, frustrated, or bored. Using food to relieve tension or boredom can cause overeating and unhealthy weight gain.

  11. Do environmental factors influence your food choices? • Yes • Family, friends, and peers • Cultural and ethnic backgrounds • Convenience and cost • Advertising

  12. Eating nutritious meals as a family can contribute to the health of all family members.
