  1. Fall Creek High School Farm Proposal “Cricket Country Produce”

Goals • Provide agriculture education students with a variety of SAE projects. • Provide hands on outdoor learning activities and laboratories for students enrolled in agriculture education classes. • Provide the community of Fall Creek with a local farmers market to purchase fresh locally grown produce. • Sell excess produce at Eau Claire’s weekly farmers market to increase sales and promotion of student farm

  3. Crops Grown • Strawberries – Pick-Your-Own & Already Picked • Pumpkins – Pick-Your-Own & Already Picked • Sweet Corn • Muskmelon • Watermelon • Summer Squash • Cucumbers • Honey Dew Melons • Popcorn

Acquire Seeds and Equipment • All seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides will be purchased and are figured into the budget • Needed paid employees have also been added into the final budget • Equipment will be provided by the school or by volunteers from area farmers. • Planting and Harvesting of Sweet Corn and Popcorn

Plant Requirements Strawberries • Direct sunlight for most of the day • Avoid low areas to avoid spring frosts • Test soil four to six months before planting • Soil pH level should be between 5.5 and 6.5 • Wait one year before planting if grass sod was present • Plant rows 3.5 to 4 ft apart • Plants must be fertilized during growing season – based on soil tests • Plants must be protected with mulch to avoid frost heaving • Hand hoeing and hand weeding are very important • Insect and disease problems only need be addressed only if serious

Plant Requirements Sweet Corn • Grows best from 60 to 80 degrees F • Grows best when exposed to full sunlight • Adequate soil moisture is critical when kernels are forming. • Poorly drained soils are to be avoided • Grows in a variety of soil types • Best in fertile, loamy, well drained soils of pH 5.8 to 6.5. • Fertilize according to soil test at planting. • Spray for weeds and pests several weeks after planting

  10. Plant Requirements Popcorn • Same requirements as sweet corn.

Plant Requirements Muskmelon • Space 18 to 24 inches in 5 to 6 ft centered rows in full sun, • Grow well on a wide range of soil types. • Loams produce higher yields • Good internal and surface drainage. • Soil pH should be near 6.2. • Rows should be raised 6 to 8 inches to facilitate soil drainage. • Fertilization • Test and use recommendations • Hand weed when necessary • Use pesticides when needed

  12. Plant Requirements Honey Dew Melon • Same requirements as Muskmelons.

  13. Plant Requirements Watermelons • Same requirements as muskmelon and Honey Dew Melon • Soil Requirements – Grow best on sandy loam soils which are well drained and slightly acid.

Plant Requirements Summer Squash • Full Sun • Do not plant until danger of frost is past. • The use of plastic mulch and row covers used to overcome cold-temperature conditions and produce an earlier crop. • Well-drained and sandy loam soil • High organic-matter & pH of 6.0 to 6.5 • To reduce the likelihood of soil-borne diseases, plant on soils that have not had squash, cucumbers, watermelons or cantaloupes for at least  • Plant seed 1 to 1½ inches deep in rows 36 to 48 inches wide. • Fertilization – Follow recommendations of soil test. • Hand weed when needed. • Apply pesticides when needed.

  15. Plant Requirements Pumpkins • Full Sun • Plant away from melons. • Soil should be well-drained. • Optimum pH is 6.0 to 6.5. T • Take a soil test to determine pH and fertilizer requirements. • Fertilizing • Follow suggestions from soil test report. • Hand weed when needed • Apply pesticides when needed

Plant Requirements Cucumbers • Full Sun • Soil temp over 60 degrees (F). • Sow seeds 20” apart • Rows 3 feet apart.  • Sow seeds so that they're grown on mounds of dirt . • Proper garden preparation is the key to avoid problems. • Add a complete fertilizer for a boost. • Hand weed when needed • Apply pesticides when needed
