Course Objectives • Students will demonstrate an understanding of • Classification to the 6 kingdom level • Matter-energy relationships • Cellular function and structure • DNA/RNA • Homeostasis • Plant/Animal Characteristics • Genes and Successive Generations • Heredity • Ecosystems • Biological evolution • Students will develop laboratory skill including the use of compound and dissection microscopes. • Students will be able to read and understand the scientific literature.

Attendance • Come to class!!! • If absent (excused) you have 3 days to see the teacher and get your work. YOU are responsible for doing this! • If you have a long term illness meet with me and we will develop a plan of action to assist you with your work.
Assessment • Formal tests: multiple choice/short answer/vocabulary • Informal tests: projects, lab reports, presentations • Quizzes: may or may not be announced • EOCT: State End of Course Exam given in December and May (if you pass you may be exempt from taking the science graduation test your junior year). This state exam counts 20% of your grade. • Final Exam: Year end exam…you will have a study guide
Grading • Unit tests, major projects 55% • Quizzes, journals, labs, HW 25% • EOCT 20% • Final Exam Test Grade
Grading • If you miss an exam or work • You must notify me • preferably prior to exam day or the day after you miss class • but at least within 24 hours afterward • You must make arrangements to take a make-up within three (3) business days.
Cheating • You Cheat, you’re Meat • Cheating will not be tolerated-it will result in an automatic zero, phone call or meeting with the parents, and possible disciplinarian action.
Research • Paper The intention of this assignment is mostly for the following (in this order): • To introduce you to accessing, reading, and extrapolating from scientific peer-reviewed papers. • To assess your ability to assimilate and compose a scientifically-styled, grammatically correct written argument. • To teach you (and your instructor) about some interesting biological phenomenon • No plagiarism-give credit to the author
