  1. Organs

  2. WHAT IS AN ORGAN? • Organized group of tissues that performs a specific function CAN YOU NAME SOME?

  3. SKIN • Largest organ • Protective layer, defence against disease, insulates and releases heat • Outer layer (epidermis) made of epithelial tissue; makes vitamin D when exposed to sun (necessary for bones)

  4. SKIN • Inner layer (dermis): • Connective (blood vessels and fat) tissue • Nervous tissue (sense pain, pressure, temperature) • Muscle tissue (produces ̏goosebumps˝!)

  5. Plant organs • Roots anchor plant, collect water, store nutrients • Stem transports water and nutrients, supports leaves and flowers, and secretes a waxy substance (cuticle) that protects plant and prevents water loss

  6. Plant organs • Leaves: photosynthesis takes place • Xylem tissue carries water up from roots • Phloem tissue carries sugars to the rest of the plant • Openings called stomata control exit & entry of water, oxygen and carbon dioxide

  7. Plant organs • Flowers are reproductive structures • Male organs called stamens produce pollen • Female pistils contain ovaries and egg cells • When pollen and eggs unite, this becomes a seed

  8. Digestive organs • Mouth (epithelial) and tongue (epithelial, connective, muscle) grind up food • Glands in mouth release mucus, saliva, enzymes • Food moves down esophagus because of smooth muscle contractions called peristalsis

  9. Digestive organs • Stomach (all 4 types of tissue!) churns food, mixes with digestive juices • Small and large intestines absorb nutrients and water, create solid waste
