  2. CONTENTS • INTRODUCTION • THE GEOSPATIAL DEVELOPMENT • THE NATIONAL SPACE POLICY • SPACE CONTRIBUTIONS TO GEOSPATIAL INDUSTRY • SOME ISSUES • CONCLUDING REMARKS

  3. INTRODUCTION Malaysian Geospatial Act (draft) • Geospatial • Means natural or constructed features on land, sea, underground and space referred to any particular geographical reference system • Geospatial information • Any data or information pertaining to the locations, shapes, boundaries and description of geographic features derived from all geospatial activities through terrestrial, underground, seaborne, airborne and space borne platforms. • Forms – map, plan, model, graph, drawing, aerial imagery, satellite imagery, images and sensors data, film, negative, tape or other device, hard & soft copy • Geospatial activities • All activities related to geospatial information such as acquiring, processing, producing, updating, integrating, value-adding, disseminating, sharing, managing, handling, utilizing and storing.

  7. THE NATIONAL SPACE POLICY

  8. THE THRUSTS

  9. SPACE CONTRIBUTIONS TO GEOSPATIAL INDUSTRY THE PROGRAMMES AND ACTION PLANS …

  10. SOME ISSUES … • Space development is capital intensive • Foreign data and service providers – satellite imagery • Geospatial data policy

  11. CONCLUDING REMARKS … • Local Geospatial industry is growing • Infrastructures needed to serve it – space is one • Important to have data policy that encourages the growth of the industry

  12. THE GEOSPATIAL DEVELOPMENT • MyGDI as a Malaysian National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) • Malaysian Center for Geospatial Data Infrastructure (MaCGDI)is a center under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE). • MaCGDI was formed in 2002 to promote the development and implementation of Malaysian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (MyGDI)as the Malaysian NSDI. • MaCGDI plays crucial roles to spearhead the geospatial industry in Malaysia.

  13. Earth Observation Satellite: • TiungSAT, RazakSAT and current is RazakSAT-2 • Important role in resources investigation and the monitoring of environment disasters. EO satellite data can be applied to numerous fields as agriculture, forestry, water resources, land use, cartography, mineral exploration and ocean investigations.

  14. Communication Satellite: • Proposal to develop, launch and operate a small Geostationary Satellite as part of the telecommunication network architecture to serve the needs of the Government of Malaysia. • Among others the satellite will enhance data linkages capabilities between Government facilities; support numerous applications such as administrative services – geospatial data access?

  15. Navigation Services: • Enhancing GNSS services for local users • Core services - GPS, GLONASS • Satellite Based Augmentation System (My-SBAS) - addresses the needs of all modes of navigation needs, including Military, Civil Aviation, Maritime and Land users, as well as precise positioning. • Multi GNSS • GLONASS utilization in Malaysia • QZSS extension of services
