  1. Wednesday January 29, 2014Bell Ringer: Completely factor the following numbers: 117 97 133

  2. What We are Learning Today: • To simplify radicals when they are not perfect roots

  3. Do You Remember? • What a RADICAL is? • What a RADICAND is? • What an INDEX is?

  4. radical index radicand Notation Note: An index of 2 is understood but not written in a square root sign.

  5. How do we Simplify Radicals? • The idea is to break the RADICAND down into parts that are perfect roots by using prime factors • Once the RADICAND is broken down into its prime factors • Find the “sets” of numbers that equal the INDEX • Square Roots need pairs (2) of the same number • Move the “sets” to the outside of the radical • Each “set” equals one of its kind • A “set” of 5’s becomes one 5 • If more than one number is outside of the radical multiply these numbers together • Numbers that do not have a “set” stay under the radical • Multiply any numbers left together

  6. Let’s Try These Together: • √20 • √120 • √360 • √35

  7. Practice Time: • Simplifying Radicals Worksheet
